Just back from a trip to Berlin and and took in a visit to Hansa Studios and the Meistersaal. Our tour guide Thilo was excellent.

It was really good to finally visit the famous "big hall by the wall". Its a beautiful room with great acoustics. The set up was unconventional in that the control room would have been round the corner and the band / mixer had to communicate via CCTV. It is now mainly used as a function suite and the mixing desks are long gone.

Apparently the guys spent a long term there over two separate periods in the build up to Aching baby (over 3 months in total) as shown to some extent on "from the sky down". It was interesting to hear from Thilo that despite all of his research it is still not clear how many of the actual recordings from the Meistersaal actually made it to the versions we hear on the album and how many were re-recorded in Dublin.

Thilo also said that U2 consulted Bowie on the early recordings (and he was not that positive), leading to a lot of re-recordings

(Sorry about pictures - any idea how I get them to upload correctly?)
