Guitars Edge Used For Recording NLOTH

Any guess as to the guitars used on each song? Here's my predictions:

No Line On The Horizon- Epiphone Casino
Magnificent- Fender Telecaster
Moment of Surrender- Gretsch (you know, this one)

Unknown Caller- Gibson Les Paul Custom
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight- Gretsch Country Gent.
Get On Your Boots- Fender Telecaster
Stand Up Comedy- Fender Strat
Fez Being Born- Gretsch Country Gent.
White As Snow- Gretsch (same model from MOS)
Breathe- Epiphone Casino
Cedars of Lebanon- I actually have no idea as to what would be used but my guess is Gretsch Country Gent.

What are your guesses as to what was used for each song?

Stand Up Comedy: Rickenbacker 330/12 (have a close listen, the riff is a 12 string)

I thought at the time that Unknown Caller could very easily have been the Casino, but im not completely sure.

Most songs have more than one guitar on them.

Case in point? Looking back to ATYCLB, "Walk On" was one of the Les Paul Custom's but the solo was the Explorer.

There was a clip on U2.com of Edge working on "Magnificent", using a tobacco finish Telecaster. But yet live he's using the Country Gent. But that might be as the slide parts on the album were the Gent and sounded best with that guitar... so it made sense to use the Gent for the entire tune - live.

That said, you can't always trust a pic or video from a session as that may have been the truth that day but not on the final version. In Rattle And Hum, Edge is seen using his Gretsch White Falcon for "Desire". Dallas has said that the album version is a Les Paul Custom.

Another example would be the making of The Unforgettable Fire documentary. In that doc, there is a Les Paul Custom being used for "Pride", yet live it's been Stratocasters. Maybe the studio track has both. Maybe it was the LP until they slowed the track a bit, like seen in the doc. The LP might have been too muddy so it was recut with the Strat?

And yet another example? "It Might Get Loud". In various seens Edge can be seen using the Gibson SG (usually used for "Elevation") while working on "Get On Your Boots" and later in the movie he's seen using a Gretsch Country Gentleman. Are either of these guitars in the final mix? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

By the way, I don't think that they Gretsch Country Club being used for MOS is the same one from the Please video cap you posted.

Also keep in mind that Daniel Lanois was playing on the album. Sometimes he's been known to use Edge's Gibson Les Paul 30th Anniversary Goldtop but he often uses his own guitars. (Gibson Firebird, 1955/56 Gibson Les Paul with P90 pickups, Guild acoustic, Gibson J200 acoustic, Sho-Bud pedal steel...I remember seeing Danny with a black Explorer in one of the Fez clips/pics -- being a few of the items)

In the end, it's easier to ascertain what is being used LIVE than in the STUDIO, as we weren't there and many times multiple guitars are being used for studio recordings. It's fun to try to figure it out. So please don't take any of this in a negative light. I'm just pointing out that there is more than meets the eye... or ears.

Absolutely. Nothing negative about that at all. I guess I wasn't thinking before posting this but still it is fun to see what guitars were used. And I definitely agree that Edge, and who ever else helped on the guitars tracks, used two + guitars on some songs. Anyway I guess this thread is pointless.

A few bits and pieces in response:

Remembers that Magnificant was played live on the tele custom on the bbc rooftop? Also on Magnificant, I feel that the studio version slide solo is the Lanois pedal steel rather then a guitar.

I totally agree however. Im the same, i use different guitars for different parts etc and often overdub with different guitars altogether, which is definetly what edge does.

Example: SUC. I said Ric, however the riff MIGHT be a strat, but theres definetly some octave thing going on there so its maybe the ric. the verses however are definetly the ric. and i dont think the chorus is the ric, its something else.

Oh and about the Gretsch I said he used for Moment of Surrender I'm talking about the one he used to play MOS on for the SNL performance way back in October and has been using to play MOS on the whole tour.

I'm with Quadcaster on the Magnificent pedal steel. Sounds totally different when played live.

Yep. I wish he still did! Love that guitar. Yeah, Mr. The Edge needs to use his more. It's out on the tour, it's in the guitar cases and Dallas mentioned it in the Music Radar interview.

I own a black Fender "Crafted in Japan" Custom myself. It works nice for Magnificent as you have the single-coil bridge p'up for most of it and the humbucker for the slide bits. Lovely.

I am not convinced of that. I think Edge is playing the slide part. You can hear the Herdim pick striking the notes with the grip side, as it The Edge's way. Leads me to believe that it Edge playing. Danny doesn't use picks when playing guitar and uses finger picks only sometimes when playing pedal steel.

Octave bits could be the E-H Pog. But there could definitely be a Rickenbacker in there too. Maybe this pic below is part of that session?
