Guitar Strings

I'm a new guitar player and was wondering what strings would be best for my new guitar. It would be great to hear comments from U2 cover guitarists out there. I understand Edge uses thicker gauge strings?

Mostly D'Addario? Yes. Mostly .10's and .11's? Yes but, there is more to the story.

Edge uses a variety of brands, models and gauges of strings. Here's a list, per Dallas, in a recent interview.

The Edge's guitar strings:

D'Addario EXL110 XL Reg Lite .10-.46
D'Addario EXL115 XL Blues Jazz .11-.49
D'Addario EXL116 XL Medium Top Heavy .11-.52
D'Addario EXL 140 Light Top/Heavy Bottom .10-.52
D'Addario EXL 150 Light Elec 12 String .10-.46
D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Wound EJ15 Extra Light .10-.47
D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Wound EJ26 Custom Light .11-.52
Martin MSP 400 Bronze .10-.47
Martin MSP 4050 Bronze Custom Light .11-.52
Martin M500 Extra Light Acoustic Bronze 12 String .10-.47
Ernie Ball P02233 12 String Electric .009-.046

Edge_Orchestra, do you happen to know what brand/model/type of strings goes with each of the guitars? The 12-strings are fairly easy to figure out, I suppose, but what about the rest?

I like Ernie Ball Titanium coated slinkies. 10-46.

I had 11s on one of my guitars for a while, didn't like it too much. For my Fenders I use 9s.

I use 10s on my Gibson, 9s on my Fender. For acoustic, I still with 10s. I'm not brand loyal...I'll buy whatever is in front of me.

I use Ernie Ball Beefy Slinkies.

Gauges .011 .015 .022p .030 .042 .054

Great for tuning down. Ex: If one is tuning a guitar, as Edge does, to D for "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

Still great if not tuning down. I put a set on my Telecaster Custom and fell in love with them. I showed them to Chas (of Joshua Tree tribute) and he's using them now too.

Good chime. Good tone. They hold up well.

As for which brand for which of Edge's guitars, I am not certain.

The Martin 12-string one is probably for the Martin 12-string that Edge was playing "Drowning Man" on during the Barcelona rehearsals.

Also guessing that one of the heavier sets would be used for the tobacco sunburst Stratocaster being used for "Sunday Bloody Sunday", as it is tuned to down to "D".

The Edge's guitar strings:

D'Addario EXL110 XL Reg Lite .10-.46
D'Addario EXL115 XL Blues Jazz .11-.49
D'Addario EXL116 XL Medium Top Heavy .11-.52
D'Addario EXL 140 Light Top/Heavy Bottom .10-.52
D'Addario EXL 150 Light Elec 12 String .10-.46
D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Wound EJ15 Extra Light .10-.47
D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Wound EJ26 Custom Light .11-.52
Martin MSP 400 Bronze .10-.47
Martin MSP 4050 Bronze Custom Light .11-.52
Martin M500 Extra Light Acoustic Bronze 12 String .10-.47
Ernie Ball P02233 12 String Electric .009-.046

DR EH-11 were always my favorites. they just seemed brighter and beefier than anything else.

If I had to guess, I'd say he uses .10s on his standard tuned guitars and .11s on the ones that are drop-tuned (half step down from standard).
