Rock n' Roll Doggie Band-aid
I read at U2sound.com that he uses dr.strings, however in the htdaab booklet it says thanks to "ernie ball" who also does strings.

he used DR Tite-Fits 11-50 Extra Heavy strings for most of the 80s. I think during the Elevation tour he started using Ernie Ball 11s.
Personally, I think the DR strings are much much better than the Ernie Balls. They're so much brighter and last longer.
