'Been around the back, been around the front'

In the song Mofo, does anybody know what sort of effect was used on Edge's voice (I presume it's his) to get that strange vocal effect on those lines? Can anyone think of how to create a close approximation?

I think it's got filter, at least. Hi-pass filter sounds close. I don't know about the rest.
