iv just watched a video of U2 performing Bad at Boston 2005

then when i watch videos like Live Aid, i still wonder teh same thing

during the intro of the song, its a base drum beat,
then Larry kicks in with duel drum sticks on the snare
But when the song really kicks off, i hear AND see ONE drumstick hitting the hi-at and Snare, but what is the other one doing? i cant hear any noise from it while the other stick is hitting the hi-at, i see it moving but what is it hitting? his knee?

im very confused,

wondering this for two reasons,
1-i love this song and it puzzles me
2-im in a band and we are thinking of covering this but it sounds weird with only 1 beat

(hi-at,hi-at,hi-at,snare (snare),hi-at)etc etc

anybody have any clue?

on R&H = (bass drum, bd, bd, bd + tambourine) x4

irving plaza = (hh, hh, hh, hh + t) x4 - then = (hh+bd, hh+bd, hh+bd, hh+bd+t) x4

boston dvd = (nothing, n, n, t)

those are the ones I remember

when the song 'kicks off' (i suppose your reffering to the last chorus), it looks like Larry is doing a lot of snare, and throws in a few closed high hats. it's mostly snare though.

so how come you can never hear anything else except one drumstick doing all the work?
its like hes waving the other one around for no reason!

ok request to whoevers going to a U2 concert,
if they perform bad, film a close up on Larry to see how he does it! lol

im sure he's 16th 'ghost' notes with his other hand on either his floor tom or the tambourine. Its a way of subtley filling out the beat without anything distinct, he does this quite a bit in a few songs.
