Amen... my only regret is that they only play the French horn part once.... that part made me tear up.

AND, listen to the radical yet subtle distortion guitar underneath... just gorgeous.

This song feels really sparse, gorgeous, and beautiful. Its atmosphere is enthralling.

It's my second favourite song on the album at this early juncture, between Magnificent at first and Fez at third.

I really did not at all expect to enjoy this song as much as I do (especially after the walmart clip... those who heard the album were right - there is SO much going on in these songs)!

Great song! A lot better than I thought it would be. Kinda reminds me of Joshua Tree.

definitely, it evokes spaces. It actually kind of reminded me of Rattle and Hum. Van Dieman's Land. yeah.

what a beautiful song. like, everything about it.

Bono I love you

It's a song that cleary could leave people with tears in their eyes. I liked a lot, and is it just me or it reminds of Summer '68 by Pink Floyd in some parts? I loved that. Again, I wasn't expecting this at all from U2.
Slow and beautiful, without any worry to be something "attractive" to the ears.

I have to say of all the tracks we knew about, this is the title I fell in love with from the very beginning. It evoked certain pictures in my mind of what the song could be like. This song more than lives up to that mental image I had built up.

It is (as people have already said) Heartwrenchingly beautiful  I agree about the playing live bit! I think I will need to take plenty of tissues for when they play this live  The French Horn was an unexpected interjection and fuck it SO works :hyper:

My boys you are breaking my heart with the beauty of your records

Here's a quick attempt. Help me on a couple of these parts, if you can -

White As Snow

Where I grew up there were no hills at all
The land was flat, the highway straight and wide
My brother and I, we'd drive for hours, like we'd years instead of days
Our faces as pale as the dirty snow

Once I knew there was a love divine
Then came a time I thought it knew me not
Who can forgive forgiveness when forgiveness is not?
Only the land as white as snow

And the water it was icy
As it washed over me
And the moon shined above me

Now this dry ground it bears no fruit at all
Only ??? under a crescent moon

The road refuses strangers
The land, the seeds we sew
Where might we find a land as white as snow?

As boys we would go hunting in the wood
To sleep, the night ?shun? out the stars
Now the wolves are every passing stranger
Every face we cannot know
For only a heart could be as white as snow
For only a heart could be as white as snow

Only "poppies laugh" under a crescent moon

I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me right now.

Oh and I love this song. Very high on my list.

The song that has surprised me the most. To be honest, I thought this song was going to bore the hell out of me after the 30 second clip. I was dead wrong. It gives me chills...so sad and so beautiful.

This song is probably one of my favorites on this album. Especially when you take into consideration the context of the song.

It is so powerful when you think about it.

Bono has sung this song in character.

The lyrics are the last thoughts of a dying soldier in Afghanistan. Hence the reference to the "Poppies" and "Crescent Moon"

But, just imagine that this soldier who is about to die any minute is remembering some good memories of driving with his brother, etc.

If this does not break your heart, you are not human.

i love this song! it's so beautiful it hurts... heartachingly beautiful!

it's suddenly dawned on me it reminds me a little of I Am Kloot, especially The Same Deep Water As Me, not the vocals at all obviously, but there's a little bit of a vibe there... there's the beautiful horns too...
