The Download Heard 'Round the World: iTunes Numbers Show 81 Million 'Experienced' U2 Album | Billboard

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior VP of internet software and services, tells Billboard that U2's Songs of Innocence has racked up a staggering 26 million complete downloads since its Sept. 9 release as a free download exclusively to Apple's 500 million global iTunes customers. In total, Cue adds, over 81 million Apple customers experienced songs from Innocence, a global figure that includes plays and streams through iTunes, iTunes Radio and Beats Music. "To help put this into perspective," he says, "prior to this, 14 million customers had purchased music from U2 since the opening of the iTunes Store in 2003."

Pretty impressive stuff. I am genuinely surprised at how high the downloaded number is, as those are all people choosing to download the album... quite different from people having it accidentally come on shuffle via iCloud.

Props to the band... it worked.

I thought we would get this figure on monday,im persuming we will get another press release on monday.

That is very nice, but I did not receive anything from APPLE.
I really don´t care for or use Apple stuff.
But I did get the album 30 minutes after it was officially released,
so I am happy to have it.
Thank you U2 for such a pleasent gift.
I am very grateful for your generosity.

Apart from these Apple customer downloads, I might say that double that
number of people have downloaded the record off the internet. Perhaps even triple
the number of downloads... 80+ million people have downloaded this record.

Now let us see the figures of how many are actually going to purchase the
2-CD-deluxe version or the Vinyl records.
Maybe by the middle of November they should have a number figure of actual
buyers of this record.

70,000 pre-orders is a good start.
Some stadium concerts here in Europe
had that many people watching a U2 concert. I was there a few times.
That is a lot of people drinking beer inside that stadium :D

Add another 20-50K to that and it could be Number 1 on the Billboard charts...:hmm:

Its easily going to do over 100k isnt it,so fingers crossed. Is there any other releases? Lady gaga and tony bennet got to number 1 last week with 130k i think it was

U2 Album 'Experienced' by 81 Million iTunes Users | Billboard

Full billboard article. Its sold at least 70,000 on pre orders alone in america

Not necessarily so. The article states that:
Based on pre-orders alone, sources suggest to Billboard the physical deluxe edition will move an additional 70,000 copies in the U.S.

So they estimate (extrapolate) the sales of the physical album (70,000) based on what is pre-ordered up to now. Which is most likely less than 70,000.

Correct. I think what they are saying is, by the amount sold as of now, they will sell around 70,000 copies when the chart comes out.

That really is quite a low number. I thought I was being conservative guessing 120 to 130k. But they may only do half that.

If that's the case, it will definitely be a rough run for this album unless they have some surprise hit. In fact, this album even reaching Gold certification would be a stretch.

NO what it says it that the deluxe version will move an ADDITIONAL 70,000!

ROFLMAO! I just spilled my beer.
Lady Ga Ga has a new record?
I thought she went back to her planet?
Its amazing what kids these days are listening to. Lady Ga Ga tries hard to
be another Madonna, but its difficult to duplicate the original.
Madonna has done it all before and much better in my honest opinion.
"Tony" Anthony Benedetto is a cool crooner. He´s from the Old school of
how it was done. He´s got that style that only he and Frank Sinatra could
bring to a stage. No fancy breakdancing, just a cool singing style.
I am amazed he is sill around singing. Great for him to
be on the top selling list. :applaud: However, I still prefer hearing Sinatra.
No one could really sing like him. He´s the original "Chairman of the board",
Bono also tries very hard to sound like Sinatra, but its always been very
difficult to imitate good Old Blue eyes. After all Sinatra is an original, often
imitated but never duplicated.
Bono is not that bad of a singer at this stage in his life, so I do hope U2
records will sell good next week.

In the context of the article, the "additional" refers to "in addition to" what was downloaded already, which doesn't count towards sales.

I'm not so sure those numbers don't include those who had "automatically download purchased music" checked off on their iTunes/iCloud settings. I'm fairly certain it does include those who got the album without choosing to download it.

That said, still an impressive number.

So do they total both editions as one?

I thought that too. But then remembered that they stated that only 200,000 people downloaded it in the first 24 hours. Which, if u had auto download on, it would download within the first minutes of it being released.

That said, it makes this number all the more impressive

I've counted 8 people I know actually post on Facebook that they listened/enjoyed the album. These are people that I never would have imagined going to the store to buy NLOTH.

This release strategy reached much further than their last week. Even with the bashing, I don't see how this wasn't a success.

In a way, this release is kind of similar to the nude leaks of all those female celebrities.

It showed up on the internet at random...millions sampled it...most walked away unimpressed. And like most of the nudes (aside from Kate Upton riding), U2 didn't put out something that represented them at their best, thus making it an embarrassing reveal in front of millions.

Still, we got "California" which all the true fans love.

So you're saying the celebrity leaks weren't as fap-tastic as tranny porn for you?

So you're pretty much trying to troll everyone at the same time aren't you? Well done.

Nah. It's almost like these celebrities were caught unawares and lack the appeal of paid performers (of any sex) adhering to male fantasies, thus making them very un-fapworthy.

In a way, the same reason I don't really give extra points to female celebrities or find them nearly as attractive as porn stars are kind of the same reason I don't get excited about U2 being famous by having a lot of hits or garnering attention by appearing everywhere. Who really cares about millions knowing your name? It's the quality of the work that matters. I find it rather disturbing when people get all :hyper: over an album's promotional push around here. Like they just absolutely love U2 annoying everybody and acting like this is some sort of Olympic sport. I could give a fuck and would rather they not take such actions. They're still going to have a sell-out tour regardless and the income from the album will barely make a dent in their bank accounts.

Thanks, I put a lot more effort than usual into this one. And by a lot, I mean actually tried. I figured if anybody was nodding their heads in agreement by the end that I could scare them off by mentioning my love for a divisive track like "California"

Hopefully it worked!

You can say that now, but if they didn't spend their lives doing promo pushes and caring about sales and charts, then they wouldn't be where they are today.
They may in fact be nowhere.
I respect the fact that they want their music heard. Nothing is more annoying than bands that act as if they don't care and those that do are somehow lower quality. Or those that act like they don't care, but really do (see Thom York)

You are a sad person.

I do believe they will....standard, deluxe and vinyl.

they are estimating 70k in pre orders in the US alone. The question is, how many albums will they sell the week of release?

If they do some heavy promo with SNL, Late Night with Fallon, GMA and throw in some kind of stunt appearance, they might be able to get the total to north of 150k, maybe even 200k.

I would be curious to know what their pre-order total was for NLOTH and then see what they sold during the week of release (ie. pre-order subtracted from 436k).
