Is 402 the best U2 song since 'One'?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Almost every U2 song since One has been better than One.

Even A Man And A Woman. Even Wild Honey. Even Miami!

Axver, why such the hate for One? Sure, it's probably overrated, but it's certainly not a bad song for what it tries to accomplish.

Because I see it as having very little of note. Its one feature that could have redeemed it isn't even on the album version - the "do you hear us coming?" verse that was done live.

But there are six U2 songs I hate more.

only time will tell i remember when one came out here in the uk and there was not much fuss about it i think it made no 8 in the charts now 15 years on it is now regarded as one of the best songs ever recorded here in the uk. so i belive a song can only be regarded as great after several years.

ONE was originally titled ENO :sexywink:
because brian eno was in the house aka HANSA TON STUDIO
all of the beach clips, in that developing stage, aren't on a good quality level. i just hope that the end result is better than e.g. THTBA or ES

I've been away for a while.. what is 409? where can I find it? :reject:

It's not a real U2 song. We thought it was, but it wasn't. 400, 402, 403, and 404 are real, though.

I like ALL MY LIFE

But it's tough to say that any of the beach clips can be ranked on any level at this point because you can barely hear them

How come some friend can post that "402 is the best U2 song since One"

Damn, have you ever heard Love Is Blindness? Please?, Stay?, The First Time?, Lemon?, Miss Sarajevo?, Mofo?, Gone?, Zooropa?, Staring At The Sun?, If You Wear That Velvet Dress?, City Of Blinding Lights?, HMTMKMKM?, If God Will Send His Angels?, Dirty Day?, The Wanderer?, etc, etc

402 is just another beach clip, that's all. The possibility of being included on U2 18 Singles doesn't make it a great song at all. Usually new singles of compilations suck big time and are just filler crap to fullfit contractual obligations, hit and miss summer hits

All the beach clips were just that, demos that revealed a band completely out of ideas, playing "new" songs just because, with a noticeable lack of songwriting quality. Maybe the band themselves noticed that the new songs were going to nowhere and sounded already too much heared before and predictable, pretty much ATYCLB and HTDAAB leftovers; and abandoned the new album for a different and much easier release: a compilation

Goodness! The Slow Loris arises from a 2-year posting slumber! How was hibernation, oh loris?

To keep the loris happy & answer the question:

To match or top the anguish in One, I'd say Please or WUDM. Other options for topping One in recent years include Stay & Beautiful Day.

As for whether 402 is the best thing since One, I can't quite tell yet...will have to hear a real copy...

Hybernation was indeed fruitfull! Speaking of which....mango? Anyone? DE-Lish!

Back to what you're all dying to know. 402, in its original incarnation, is the greatest thing since sliced avacado with a side of shrimp. What it will sound like in its final incarnation, however, is something only the gods can possibly understand or even pretend to know. As for the original incarnation, it is indeed better than 'Beautiful Day', better than 'Kite', better than anything on HTDAAB, and better than 'Gone'. It doesn't reach the emotional hights of 'One' or 'Miss Sarajevo', but then, what does? 'With or Without You', sure, but not much else.

This is a different kind of song. And you might not see it for a while, despite the rumours of being on the latest compilation album. But don't worry, Headache in a Suitcase, one day it will be your asperin.

Utoo, you are gifted in ways you don't yet know. You must be smart, since we agree on practically everything.

Dorian Gray, you have one of the best names here at Interference. As for me, I don't have a name. I'm just a Loris.

Gee, that's a highly unusual to have One ranked so low on a ranking of U2 songs. What are the other 6, pray tell?

For me personally, One is probably ranked between 20-35...

I've always been partial to this one.... (Oh wait, did you want a U2 song? )

The Sun The Moon The Stars

Piano intro verses:

When we pushed ourselves over
When we swam further down under
And ran on through that oh so slippery way
It was the sun, the moon, the stars that melted away
The fire in the night that pulled our dreams away
Into the orange and the gold
Against an open sea, an open sea
Into your arms, not needing to breathe
And waves now come crashing in
Bringing me back under your skin
It was through your liquid shards
And the sun the moon, the Stars...

Chorus:

And she finds her way just as you look away
You walk on by in the shadow she kept for you
Behind the candle she lit for you
In the ocean she pulled for you
And she slips away...
It was the sun, the moon, the stars...
Her eyes, the skylight in my afternoon
Her hands, the hourglass of this moment
She shall not pass, shall not pass
It was the sun, the moon, the stars
Never to fall through
No, she shall not pass

Verse:

And so she goes as the eyes of the world are closed
As the kings in high places lose control
The Earth becoming the friend betrayed
A pearl in a sea, not to fade, not to fade
Below these skies, a world still breathing
A firefly at dusk keeps singing...oh,
hmmmyeah...[scat singing in falsetto]

Chorus:

And she finds her way just as you look away
You walk on by in the shadow she kept for you
In the candle she lit for you
In the ocean she pulled for you
And she slips away
It was the sun, the moon the stars...[scat singing]
The skylight in my afternoon
Her hands, the hourglass of this moment
She shall not pass, shall not pass
For it was the sun, the moon, the stars...

Reprise:

Never to fall through
Never to die out
Never to fall out
Never to drop out
Never to cry out
Never to burn out
Never to fade out
Never to pass on through
No, for this shall not pass...

Outro Verses:

And sometimes I fall away against the night
Under the crack that lets through the light
Pushed inside, it's only of you
Yeah, it's candlelight
Through the window explosions seep in
The lights in the sky all turn dim
Beyond silence I hear your cry
Yeah, beyond it all, the buzz and firefly
And so I fall away into arms
Beyond the sun, the moon and the stars...

Mangoes for everyone!
