My Ranking

This is about 8 Listens...

Grouping: Stellar, Classic (In Order)
1-2. Unknown Caller (Tied for best record)
1-2. Crazy Tonight (Tied for best record)
3. Magnificent (Most Potential, but chorus and edge solo falls a bit flat)
4. No Line on the Horizon (v1 and v2 meeting somewhere in the middle would have been perfect)

Grouping: Above Average (In Order)
5. Moment of Surrender (Very nice, but lacks something special)
6. Stand Up Comedy (groovy, a bit annoying)
7. Fez Being Born (lots of mood, but falls a bit flat not utilizing the potential of edges riff)

Grouping: Below Average (In Order)
8. Breathe (Actually love Edge here, but Bonos vocal delivery ruins the song)
9. White as Snow (not terrible, but kind of a yawner)
10. Cedar of Lebanon (meh, just be yourself, u2)

Grouping: Abomination; an offense to a Holy and Righteous God
11. Boots (a blasphemous high tech genetic splicing experiment gone bad and aborted at 6 months somehow animated by an undead black magic and force feeding of Cheez-Its)

Best Edge Riff: Crazy Tonight

Weakest Link: As always, Bono... then Adam, then Larry. Edge is the backbone of the band.

Artistic Direction: 9/10 - Very happy to have a consistent, coherent and atmospheric album with complexity and maturity, as opposed to a collection of radio-friendly singles.

Production: 6/10 - Inconsistent mixing; sometimes great, sometimes aweful. Mastering is poor, but not nearly as atrocious as Bomb. For the love of God fire Lanois and Lillywhite already; please bring back Flood, and keep but temper Eno.

1) White As Snow (9.5/10)
2) Fez - Being Born (more so for Being Born) 8.5/10
3) Breathe (Exceeded expectations...) 8.5/10
4) Magnificent (not as good as I hoped for... but I'll give it more time) 8/10
5) Stand Up Comedy (great second half). 7.5/10
6) No Line On The Horizon (although NLOTH2 is better IMO). 7/10
7) Unknown Caller (not quite there yet for me...). 6.5
8) Moment Of Surrender (I hate the chorus... sounds like 80s pop... but the verses are One caliber, plus the much talked about solo is a little average). 6/10
9) Crazy Tonight (Too busy... and the chorus is a let down). 5.5/10
10) Cedars Of Lebanon (I hate most closers... minus AIWIY, so meh). 5.5/10
11) GOYB (Vertigo... minus catchy). 5/10

These are just my thoughts... and this adds up to 7/10 for the album in the early stages.

FINALLY...someone with "White as Snow" as no. 1
Even though I haven't heard the album yet just reading the reviews I thought this would be one of the best songs in a long while. Why is it so low on most people's lists????

1--> Magnificent
2--> Moment of Surrender
3-->Fez-Being Born(this song reminds me so much The Unforgettable Fire era)
4-->Unknown Caller
5-->White as Snow
6-->I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
7-->Get on Your Boots
8-->No Line On The Horizon
9-->Breathe (it's growing on me, i didn't like the beach clip)
10-->Cedars of Lebanon
11-->Stand Up Comedy ( i don't know why, but i find it a little boring, i was expecting more of this)

It wouldn't be possible for me to rank the songs yet, because they made it too hard... there's no filler whatsoever on this album!

I had a really hard time ranking them, 12 hours after the first listen, for me the biggest compliment we can do about this album is precisely that. It's a real cohesive album, I :applaud: to them.

Even though I haven't heard the album yet just reading the reviews I thought this would be one of the best songs in a long while. Why is it so low on most people's lists????

cuz its not instantly gratifying. i expect it to slowly rise on peoples' lists, including mine.

1. Magnificent
2. Moment of Surrender
3. IGCIIDGCT
4. No Line
5. Fez
6. White as Snow
7. Unknown Caller
8. Breathe
9. GOYB
10. Stand up
11. Cedars

I hope I don't sound like I'm crapping on anyone's opinions, but I just don't get people's love for Unknown Caller. Doesn't anyone else find the chanting almost laughable?? Crazy Tonight is the only other song I'm not into yet. But other than that, the album is amazing.

1. Magnificent
2. Breathe
3. Stand Up Comedy
4. No Line On the Horizon
5. Fez
6. Get On Your Boots

8. White As Snow
9. Cedars
10. Crazy Tonight

Funny to see how many different songs are people's favs! :hmm:

It does seem that "Boots" is getting kicked to the curb by most even though this is the one that got us excited about the album in the first place.

After 10 listens at top volume on my stereo system (my hippie neighbors hate me):

1. SUC - awesome rocker, will destroy live
2. NLOTH - another asskicker, chorus has been in my head all day today
3. MOS - this is the album opus
4. B - some weak spots, but overall good guitar song, interesting arrangement
5. F-BB - weird intro, then tension/release the rest of the way
6. GOYB - sounded better live at The Brits than at The Grammys
7. IGCIIDGCT - Edge's four notes remind me of the end of SYCMIOYO
8. M - cool music, but I don't like Bono's singing here
9. UC - too generic, standard U2, too long
10. WAS - sounds like a bad B-side from October
11. COL - tuneless rap song

I did not listen to the beach clips or the 30 second clips. Only have listened to Boots (maybe 5 times total). After ONE listen:

1. Magnificent
2. Unknown Caller (I *like* this one the best right now but I think ^ is better overall)
3. Moment of Surrender
3. IGCIIDGCT
3. NLOTH
6. Breathe
7. Stand Up
8. White as Snow
9. Boots
10. FEZ
11. Cedars

Yes, three of them are tied right now, interchangeable among those spots.

1) Magnificent
2) Breathe
3) Stand Up Comedy
4) A three way tie between No Line, MOS & IGCIIDGCT
5) Fez Being Born
6) Cedars
7) Unknown Caller
8) White as Snow
9) Get On Your Boots

It's not that I dislike Boots and it definitely makes more sense where it's placed on the album now that I've heard it in full.

I just love the whole damn thing, honestly.

Here we go...

1.Fez - Being Born
Excellent - U2 really being adventurous.

2.No Line On The Horizon
Excellent - Passangers and '00s U2 have a baby.

3.Magnificent
Excellent - The band performance has an UF/TJT kind of vitality that meets with the more futuristic sounding synthesizers from Eno, a great mixture.

4.Moment Of Surrender
Very Good - Gripping intensity in the chorus, has a sadness that feels genuine rather than kind of forced like in SYCMIOYO.

5.White As Snow
Very Good - A truly unique song for them, great imagery.

6.Cedars Of Lebanon
Very Good - Synths are fantastic! Love the vocal samples. "Return the call to home" section is chilling.

7.Breathe
Very Good - Solid rock song from U2, on par with a track like Native Son, has a nice balance of light and dark moments.

8.Unknown Caller
Good - It has some really great moments musically, especially the intro and ending. Something about the vocals keeps me from fully embracing it. Suspect it could grow on me more over time.

9.I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Alright - Chorus is awesome. Some of the lyrics make me wince. Don't like the "Baby, baby, baby" bit. The climax afterwards is ace.

10.Get On Your Boots
Alright - There are some interesting elements and it has a good groove but it never takes off on the same level as some of the other tracks. The lyrics are nonsensical overall. I do like the synth during the "Sexy boots...etc." section.

11.Stand Up Comedy
Alright - the "Come on you people...etc." bit takes me out of the song, more wince-inducing moments lyrically. The bridge is pretty cool, though.

1-7 are the top, must-hear tracks for me.

Magnificent
No Line on the Horizon
Unknown Caller
Stand Up Comedy
The horns on White as Snow (really wished it had more of those)
Breathe
Get On Your Boots
Cedars Of Lebanon
Fez-Being Born
Moment of Surrender
Crazy Tonight

After twenty something listens to the whole album

I really want the official lyrics to make my mind up about the songs, but until then...

1.) Unkown Caller
2.) Moment of Surrender
3.) Crazy Tonight
4.) Magnificent
5.) Breathe
6.) Stand Up Comedy
7.) Fez-Being Born
8.) Get on Your Boots
9.) White as Snow
10.) Cedar
11.) No Line

Of course, subject to change. Overall a U2 album that has sufficent musical variety and enough daring to be memorable. I hate comparing it to other albums because they all have their time and place. But I could see this one becoming a favorite and still listenable in years to come.

1. Magnificent
2. Breathe
3. Stand Up Comedy
4. Moment of Surrender
5. No Line on the Horizon
6. IGCIIDGCT
7. Get on Your Boots
8. Fez-Being Born
9. White as Snow
10. Cedars of Lebanon
11. Unknown Caller

1. Magnificent - just magnificent, enough said
2. SUC - liked on first listen, loved on second and beyond, dirty dirty dirty
3. MoS - such a mood setter, love the way bono sings on this track
4. Breathe - end of this song is the reason i became a fan, they're rolling
5. UC - very surprising, didn't like the beach clip or 30 sec preview, but there's something cool about this song. Just can't place it yet.
6. GOYB - would probably be ranked higher if it wasn't the first single, still like it though
7. NLOTH - jury's still out on this, but this could easily have been number 5
8. White as Snow - this is growing on me, haunting song, might move up the list
9. Fez - being born - cool song, just feels like there could be more to it
10. CoL - The perfect closer
11. CT - Nice pop song

Obviously things can change (and probably will).

Would rather just listen to the entire album at once, each song seems to compliment each other.
