Was away 5 days and there is our so-wanted present.... ;)))))))))

Listened to everything 3 times only, very fresh sound, new but yet still U2 ish.... lot's of 70's guitar sound, Bono's voice is great, not a lot of guitar solo, if not at all, but interesting work indeed.... hard to tell which one will be the 1st single, lot's of good melodies, I'll go with California....

Here's my ranking so far:

1. Iris (Hold me close)
2. Volcano
3. California
4. Raised by wolves
5. Sleep like a baby tonight
6. The Miracle
7. Cedarwood Road
8. The Troubles
9. This is where you can reach me
10. Every breaking waves
11. Song for someone

Only the last 2 are very average..... the rest is very solid and the middle part of the album is very very strong with Iris, Volcano, Raises by Wolves, Cedarwood and Sleep like a baby tonight..... 5 great songs!!!!!

Excited!

My new ranking after 15 or so times:

1 Iris (Hold me close)
2 Raised by wolves
3 California (There is no end to love)
4 Sleep like a baby tonight
5 Volcano
6 The Troubles
7 The Miracle
8 Cedarwood Road
9 This is where you can reach me now
10 Every breaking Waves
11 Song for someone

Still no weak tunes, I never skip anything. First time since AB!!!!!

Top 3:
1) California
2) Iris
3) TIWYCRM

Bottom 3:
1) Cedarwood Road
2) Miracle
3) Volcano
Here's my 2nd edit (with full tracklisting this time):

1) California
2) Iris
3) TIWYCRM
4) Song For Someone
5) Every Breaking Wave
6) SLABT
7) The Troubles
8) Raised By Wolves
9) Miracle
10) Volcano
11) Cedarwood Road

And yes, I bumped Miracle up a spot.

Not one throw away song yet to be found. Every song sounds like an essential U2 song yet fresh and new. They seemed to have gone back to their core in every song, embracing all the different ideals and themes and patterns that made up the band yet flipped them into a new-sounding rock album. It's like this millennium's version of what the 1970's would sound like and I, personally, love what they have done to these songs.

I think The Troubles blows everything on this album out of the water. It's my favorite by a big margin and I really love Every Breaking Wave and Raised by Wolves. The Troubles just sounds like the soul we are all looking for in a U2 song, just like Moment of Surrender on the last album being the best song there by a wide margin because of the soul and deep darkness in the lyrics.

This is my ranking after about 12-15 listens of the album.

1) The Troubles
2) Every Breaking Wave
3) Raised By Wolves
4) Cedarwood Road
5) TIWYCRM
6) Volcano
7) SLABT
8) Song For Someone
9) California
10) Iris
11) Miracle

I like the album a lot. On most recent U2 albums, I found that there were a few songs that quite quickly clearly felt inferior (e.g., Peace on Earth, A Man and a Woman, All Because of You, Stand Up Comedy), but I'm not getting that yet with Songs of Innocence. It's surprisingly solid all the way through.

1. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
2. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
3. Iris (Hold Me Close)
4. The Troubles
5. California (There is no End to Love)
6. Every Breaking Wave
7. The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
8. Cedarwood Road
9. Song for Someone
10. Volcano
11. Raised by Wolves

Really hope they the play first three above live. Iris probably is certain to be played, but I would love to see how they do the other two.

C'mon ye people, stand up for your love!

1. Love: RBW! No other song on this album spans the influences of their entire history than RBW. It has a little bit of influence from all albums. Listen again and tell me I'm wrong!
2. The Miracle - just imagine yourself at the concert with this one
3. Sleep- dark and light, quiet yet driving, heavy but accessible
4. Song for Someone - may rise in my rankings
5. Troubles - also may be rising
6. California &
6. Every Breaking Wave tie for 6th
7. Cedarwood - hard to rank so low
8. TIWYCRMN - ugh, another that should be higher
9. Iris- lots of solid moments on this track but I don't like when he sings the word "Iris"
10. Volcano- until yesterday I hadn't fast forwarded. I almost never fast forward a U2 song, but this one pushes me to the limits on repetition for whatever reason.

Elsewhere I ranked this album maybe above the others. If the world had not already made up their mind about U2 and Bono, there could be 5 major hits from this album.

1. Every Breaking Wave
2. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
3. Iris (Hold Me Close)
4. The Troubles
5. Volcano
6. Cedarwood Road
7. Song For Someone
8. Raised by Wolves
9. California
10. The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)
11. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now

Fifth listen in mind you. It's changed a bit since first impression.

Okay, I've had a couple days to process it a little more. Things changed a little!

1. Iris (Hold Me Close)
2. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
3. Song For Someone
4. Every Breaking Wave
5. The Troubles
6. Cedarwood Road
7. Volcano
8. California (There Is No End To Love)
9. The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)
10. Raised By Wolves
11. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now

Second day, after 6 listens, third version of rankings:

1. Raised by Wolves
2. Iris (hold Me Close)
3. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight
4. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
5. California (There Is No End To Love)
6. Song For Someone
7. Every Breaking Wave
8. Cedarwood Road
9. The Troubles
10. The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
11. Volcano

Top 6 pretty much the same and still seem to gravitate toward the 2nd half of the album.

4th version of rankings after countless listens.

1. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight
2. Raised By Wolves
3. Iris (Hold Me Close)
4. Cedarwood Road
5. California (There Is No End To Love)
6. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
7. Song For Someone
8. Every Breaking Wave
9. The Troubles
10. The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
11. Volcano

Sleep and especially Cedarwood have really shot up. And what's crazy about this album is I love my #7 and don't hate my #11.

My early feeling that the 2nd half really made this one special hasn't changed.

Wonder what the extra tracks that come out next month will do to our rankings?

3 California
4 This is Where You Can Reach Me Now
5 Sleep Like a Baby
6 The Troubles
7 Iris
8 The Miracle

Do yourselves a favor and listen with a good pair of headphones lest you miss the spectacular production and the (finally!) higher-in-the-mix dynamics of Larry's drums.

Sent from my Freightliner, most likely.

Finally Larry is heard like a real rock n'roll drummer. I just hope he keeps that way live...

My first rank, it changes everyday:

1 - Song For Someone
2 - Volcano
3 - The Miracle
4 - Sleep like a baby tonight
5 - This is Where you can Reach me now
6 - California
7 - Cedarwood Road
8 - Every Breaking Wave
9 - Iris
10 - The Troubes
11 - Raised By the wolves

The four last probably will not change.

Not that they are bad, the other 7 are just very strong material.

And very honorable mention of Larry's drumming is the Joshua Tree tour.

I think when U2 went away from making raw music like they did in the 80s, Larry's drumming kinda got drowned out. On the flip side though, Adam's bass playing gets better every album. SOI is his best work so far imo.

Early ranking:
1. Volcano
2. The Troubles
3. Raised by Wolves

7. Iris (Hold Me Close)
8. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight

5. Raised by Wolves
6. The Troubles
7. Iris
8. The Miracle
9. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight
10. Song For Someone
11. Cedarwood Road

Things really keep shifting. EBW and California didn't wow me at first but they really seem to stick with me. For a couple of days I was thinking Raised by Wolves was actually my least favorite because of the chorus, but I think I've warmed back up to it.

Most important news of course is that they're all still good! Fun fact though, I actually think Invisible is better than any of them, which is strange because I wasn't wowed by it when I first heard it, but now it's actually one of my all time favorites.

The only song that does nothing for me is California. I've tried to like it, but it feels like running on a treadmill. A lot of effort expended but going nowhere. The lyrics are terrible.

I am really having extreme difficulty in coming up with a fixed rating for the songs. When can i would be able to do....... I don't know ....... overall album is that good. Only 2 songs are not getting many rotations are..... CALIFORNIA & MIRACLE.
