Two weeks later...

1st Iris (8,5/10)
2nd California (8/10)
3rd This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now (8/10)
4th The Troubles (7,5/10)
4th Raised By Wolves (7,5/10)
6th Cedarwood Road (7/10)
7th Sleep Like A Baby Tonight (7/10)
8th Volcano (6/10)
9th The Miracle (6/10)
10th Every Breaking Wave (5/10)
11th Song For Someone (5/10)

I remember rating "Ordinary Love" 4,5/10 and "Invisible" something like 5,5/10. Now, I'd tie "Ordinary Love" with "Every Breaking Wave" with a 5/10 and "Invisible" 6,5/10.

Update with the bonus tracks...

I'd place "Lucifer's Hands" tied with "The Miracle" (6/10) and "The Crystal Ballroom" somewhere near "Cedarwood" and "Raised By Wolves" (7-7,5/10).

Okay... One month later I'm gonna have a try...

1. Volcano
2. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
3. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
4. The Troubles
5. Iris
6. Song for Someone
7. Every Breaking Wave
8. Raised By Wolves
9. Cedarwood Road
10. California
11. The Miracle

The two only songs I think are just above average (6/10) are California and The Miracle. The rest of the songs are at least 7/10. In my opinion no song deserves a 9/10, but there are a lot of songs I would rate 8/10.

I purposefully took a break from the album for a couple weeks or so. I was risking overplaying it (15 times all the way through in 5 days is really a lot, also my favorites I listened about double that). I have not taken a break from U2, though, and when the new songs have popped up in shuffle I've listened to them.

But I wanted to put some space between the shock of the new and my real thoughts on the record. I'm very happy to say that it holds up very well. This is a great album.

So this past week I listened to all of the band's studio albums, all the way up to and including SOI. Here are my new rankings:

1. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
2. Iris (Hold Me Close)
3. Volcano
4. California (There Is No End To Love)
5. Every Breaking Wave
6. Raised By Wolves
7. The Troubles
8. The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)
9. Cedarwood Road
10. Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
11. Song For Someone

Some big changes this time. I'll revisit my list when the deluxe edition comes out and do a new ranking with Lucifer's Hands, the Crystal Ballroom, and Invisible. Maybe also a super ranking with all the alternate versions too. Hopefully all the new tracks are as great as the ones we already have!

Here's my ranking after listening to the deluxe edition:

Finally feel like I'm ready to have a crack at this:

As Good As Anything They've Ever Done
  • This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
  • Invisible

Excellent
  • California
  • Iris

Very Good
  • The Troubles
  • Volcano
  • Cedarwood Road

Good
  • The Miracle
  • Song For Someone
  • Raised By Wolves
  • Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
  • Every Breaking Wave

If I'd done this a month ago, The Troubles would've probably been in the first category. And while I still think it's really good, it's lost some of its luster.

Song For Someone and Every Breaking Wave are pretty inoffensive adult contemporary songs, but both are really good for what they are. This isn't the U2 for me so it's a testament to these songs that I don't hate them!

Wolves and Baby, on the other hand, are very much the type of U2 I like, but these just haven't resonated with me as strongly as they have with many others.

The Miracle had the potential to be a much better song than what it is, but it suffered from a poor chorus. The same problem No Line On The Horizon (the song) had.

Cedwarwood Road and Volcano are very well done rockers. Thank God after the debacle in this area on the last two albums. (I'm looking at you, Stand Up Comedy and All Because of You!)

I'm honestly shocked that there isn't a single song on this album I dislike. After the last 3 albums, I had just surrendered to the idea that there would be at least a couple of clunkers on every album now. But even the "worst" songs on this album are pretty good.
