Bono talks 3 albums again

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

You mean you hate U2's career?

I hate it so much that I'm considering becoming a Lady Gaga fan; at least she takes care of her "monsters" and gives them something concrete to talk about. And what do we get instead? Endless discussions about whether they are moving into a new studio or they are just doing some spring cleaning at HQ. :p

U2Valencia updated their last post about HQ (it doesn't offer new info tbh):

A few months ago, the U2 360° Tour came to an end and the instruments and recording equipment return to HQ in Dublin.

Yesterday one of our readers witnessed some movement at the studio even but the band was nowhere to be seen.

Basically there were some people taking equipment out of the studio and loading up a truck. And now the rumours begin: will they continue the recording sessions for the new album somewhere else? Are they just moving studios? Or is it related to a possible performance by The Edge?

one of the crew members were asked why they were moving equipment, and they said, "maybe we'll see".

All very true and yet pretty disappointing. Surely with ongoing royalties and investments they have more than enough money for their lifetime and their childrens' lifetimes.....

U2 are in a very privileged position of being financially secure and with a global fanbase which should allow them to take some risks and just release music for the hell of it. Its all about the music isn't it?

I think we also have to remember, how difficult it is for four people to agree on something, that means so much to all of them. Hell, it would be hard to find four interference members, who would agree, if we heard the material and had to arrange, mix and produce 10 songs from three albums worth of material (not songs).

Bruce can just go out and say, I'm angry about this global crisis, I have an album, U2 could never do that.

Given the fact that Bono has been jetsetting all over the world and that Edge has been working on other projects, I think it's safe to say they are in NO HURRY to finish this album. Fall of 2013, not a moment sooner.

Yep. At least there are some of us that actually learn from history.
Rather than have "faith" or actually believe anything they say.

Here's the truth, folks...At one time, Bono could win arguments within the band and dictate a lot things, practically by himself. Considering that he and Edge are often on similar creative pages, this created a situation where they could write and record The Joshua Tree in 6 months. They had the two creative people in the band making most of the creative decisions and they were often on the same page. That meant it was relatively quick and easy in the studio.

But things have evolved to where they've been since the end of ZooTV.
They can't easily agree on anything because they have different creative wants. Four, and possibly up to five different ideas of what needs to happen. Because of this, most bands would have broken up by now, long ago.

Numbers of songs 'finished', timelines for release...forget all of it.
They don't have shit 'finished' right now. To Bono, a "song" is as simple as a drum beat and a bassline recorded over it. Look at his disconnect with the other members of U2 on 'Songs of Ascent'. He considers it a finished album, as well as having material for two more albums...while we (the 'seasoned' among us) all know they don't have anything finished. Adam agrees with us.

The only thing that matters is when they hire a producer and Bono starts running his mouth about their latest work, often dropping song titles. After he does this, add a year - minimum, and probably more appropriately a year and a half, and you'll know generally when to expect a new album.

We are at no earlier than around August 2013 right now.
That's gospel truth. Watch what they do and not what they say and you'll find yourself agreeing with the obvious...which was everything I just typed.

Post UF, it was never only 6 months in the studio. But it does take longer afer Zooropa. Less inspiration, activism on the singer's part, perfectionism, fear of failure, spending time with families....take your pick.
Bono and Edge may be the creative minds, but they're not dictators and Larry and Adam weren't reduced to lemmings that go along with anything, as AB and HTDAAB debate within the band proved.

Well, it's pretty obvious they don't have anything finished* or it'd be released. That is exactly the point the band has been making : they have several projects, but not a fully finished album.
* thank Spiderman for that. Band with the main songwriters MIA can't finish the album.

Indeed. An excellent and cogent post, as always.
