After Magnificent's poor chart performance, do you think U2 will still release a third single from NLOTH? Is there any news out yet as to which song is being released next?

I sure hope they still release a third single from the album, but they need to make sure to promote it well, otherwise it might flop like Magnificent did. Magnificent only got to number 42 in the uk charts, which is one of their biggest flops for a single ever. So if there is a third single, it needs to be promoted better. It would be tragic if they missed the top 40 again, which they might well do if the next single is promoted as badly as Magnificent was.

It makes me wonder if they'd do bad enough to miss the top 75... afterall, didn't they plan to release 4 singles from this album? Does everyone think they'll still go through with that?

I know that lots of people will be like "screw charts it doesn't matter"... but it's not like Magnificent got to like number 25 or something like that... it completely missed the top 40! That is serious, especially for u2 standards. And there's now a danger that it might happen with single number three also... and single number four...

Just to clear things up too, I know that the charts have changed these days, what with it being mainly downloads etc, so Magnificent was bound to flop... but still, 42? That's terrible. And it also only spent one week in the uk top 75 also. One week!

Just to compare to other songs, let's for example look at Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - this song was the 5th single from Achtung Baby. By that point the album had been out ages, so a 5th single would be destined to not do that well. But still, this song managed to get to number 14, which is a much better position than Magnificent, which was the 2nd single from NLOTH... it's not like Magnificent was the 5th single. It was the 2nd. It flopped big time.

GOYB also flopped. Number 12 in the uk for a lead single is bad. But as I said, the charts have changed. And GOYB also got a much better position than Magnificent's 42...

What's people's thoughts? What do people think will happen with future single releases from NLOTH?

I didn't realize that the charts in the UK had changed. Can you clarify that more? (I am interested.) I rather liked the UK system of "sales only" from before. It's interesting sometimes to see what people actually go out and buy. But... should downloads be any different?

As far as I know, U2 don't even release singles as such in the US anymore, do they?

I would think Crazy.
I just don't think NLOTH is a singles type record, the songs go together. Maybe that is why they are not doing so well as singles.:hmm:

If they don't pick Crazy Tonight as a single... I don't know what I'll do. Its one of the catchiest songs they have ever recorded and its perfect for the summer.

It will be Crazy Tonight, but I dont think it will matter much the tour will promote the record more then any single will. Nobody plays music videos anymore and U2 are too old to get played on the radio anymore except for the old classic hits. Sad but true.

There's this thing called Youtube, it plays music videos a lot you might have missed it

Magnificent got a LOT of airplay in the UK and flopped still, the radio plays U2, problem is no one buys the music

They certainly bought the album... although not in Bomb-like numbers, I guess, on either side of the Atlantic.

I'd rather see Breathe as a single than Krazy Tonite, but that's just me.

Sales in the UK and US have been pretty weak for the album, it's doing well elsewhere though (excluding Canada and Australia)

Magnificent just hit 42 in the UK though, With or Without You charted at 43 this week. So take from that what you will but Magnificent did really badly

They should release MoS as the next single, it's the least radio friendly track and that's precisely why they should release it.

The strategy of winning the kids over with radio friendly choons is clearly a fail, it's time for a different approach.

Boots getting to #12 was mostly sales of the physical CD single as it was the week after the CD was released that it charted in the UK and the fans wanted NLOTH_02 I guess... so the hardcore gets you to #12...

I think taking singles from albums for some bands is becoming a law of diminishing returns.. unless you are the hot thing... plus the staggered release of Boots didn't help it much ie. the initial January dl... and btw... interesting observation.. the very fact THAT version failed to chart in the Top 40 said quite a lot... I mean, world's biggest band fails to chart with first new song in 4 years or whenever? I was expecting a high chart entry the week after, but nothing.. wtf??? Some dl's now chart very high initially on digital sales alone... So all that and a lack of original b-sides that had accompanied previous releases [songs like Salome, Holy Joe, Always, Summer Rain, Are You Gonna etc] which are always nice carrots to dangle to the hardcore fan...!

I think maybe release a single with 1 or 2 "nuggets" ie. actual album out-takes, or unreleased live session songs perhaps? [NLOTH from The Culture Show - uncut] or Live takes that have not been proliferated around the web in high quality, so no more Boston concert material that we all probably own [u2start] or 5, 6 remixes which have select appeal, though the Mag ones are generally very good, but nowadays it seems most of them get leaked onto and so everyone owns them... and you lose some sales, single formats like albums get leaked alas....

So probably the next single has to have something we don't ownk... then maybe, who knows... yeah, a chance..

Boots wasn't released as a download in the UK until the physical cd, it hit 12 in the week the physical and the download were released. It was in the top 25 on itunes that whole week pretty much

It should have been:

1. Magnificent
2. No Line on the Horizon
3. Crazy Tonight
4. Breathe

Magnificent is actually a good song. So much better than Vertigo. What's wrong with music TV stations? At the same time, U2 doesn't seem to really care, since I have been able to find North American single releases for the previous 2 albums, but not this one. All I found was an import of "Get on Your Boots", but no "Magnificent", which I would have bought for the live performance of "Breathe".

I really hope this underperformance doesn't make U2 veer more toward commercialism in their art. :(

Kidz Bop rendition of Magnificent would hit #3 on speculation of the type of consumer adoption of singles nowadays

it shouldn't bother the band all that much.

Magnificent is an excellent song and single. The charts and radio have changed, I never listen to radio because I cannot stand the music played on most stations. So I don't know and honestly don't care about any U2 single. I always listen to the album. I think Magnificent is the best single they had on the album, Crazy Tonight is not a good song. I couldn't care less if they had decided not to release anything as a single from NLOTH. I love the album and for me, U2 is the ultimate live band, so seeing them perform is all I want.

They said Crazy tonight's the next - third - single.

1. NLOTH
2. Magnificent
3. SUC
4. MOS

Question: Why does it matter to YOU as a fan as to how U2 albums are selling? Shouldn't it really come down to YOU as a fan liking a song or not? I could care less what is being played on the radio, whatever favorite band it is.

I love the song Magnificent, and if no one else does, I am ok with that. I don't need chart positions to validate my liking the song. Just as I don't particularly care about Apple's stock even though I am a fan of Apple products.

Maybe I am weird. :reject:
