A DONEGAL club has added its voice to those in opposition to the GAA's €500,000 firework spectacular, which is being used to launch the association's 125th anniversary at the NFL opener between Dublin and Tyrone, writes Cliona Foley.

A motion to have the January 31 fireworks display scrapped was proposed at the Donegal County Board meeting this week, where one delegate called it "an absolute disgrace".

"There is no excuse for spending €50,000 on such a thing, never mind blowing half a million on it, especially in the current economic climate," said Setanta hurling club's Danny Cullen.

The GAA have added €5 onto each ticket to help cover the costs and Croke Park's stadium director Peter McKenna has promised that the evening will "justify the spend".

U2 drummer Larry Mullen has written an original score to coincide with the event that will feature several musical acts and a spectacular light display.

But Cullen said, "it would be far better to donate €50,000 to Crumlin Children's Hospital, that would be much more worthwhile than this blatant waste of money."

Meanwhile, the venue for Donegal's NFL game with Dublin on March 8 also caused hot debate at this week's county committee meeting. Donegal's three home ties against Mayo, Dublin and Tyrone were initially fixed in the draft fixtures list for MacCumhaill Park (Ballybofey) as night games. Donegal subsequently applied to have two of them played on Sunday afternoons, with the intention of playing one in Ballyshannon and the other in Letterkenny.

However, Croke Park only changed the Dublin game to Ballyshannon and there is a debate locally now about whether this should be in Ballyshannon or Letterkenny.
