Hello everyone,

Every now and then I get obsessed with a particular period in the band's history. I'm currently captivated by the obscure 1994-1995 years in which I believe U2 could have become a dub reggae band, if you know what I mean :hmm:

I would appreciate so much if you can help me find any visual evidence for a project I have in mind.

Thanks a million.

There are some great Adam photos in the thread I requested a few weeks ago for 93-94 Adam. Seriously hot times for him.

Here's a video link that I think of as a pair of newborn kittens trying to roll out of bed- hilarious, a little pathetic but also delightful U2 - Amnesty International Award - The Kitchen - YouTube

And from the opening of The Kitchen in the basement of their hotel, the Clarence. Opening U2 Club 1994 - YouTube

Do you have a copy of U2 by U2? In it Edge says of their time in the south of France, "Bono and I call it our summer of love, but it lasted a year." :sexywink:

I don't know about 'visual evidence' of them becoming a dub-reggae band

Thanks a lot for not letting this thread be forgotten.

The dub reference is only related to Bono inducting Bob Marley into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... oh and to the obvious ganja influenced atmosphere of those post Zooropa years that motivated the Passengers album and the underrated Pop. I know many people discard the idea of the band enjoying some spliffs, but you just have to watch the whole "Free Your Mind" thing to realize something funny was going on... Taste is the enemy of art. That's what happens when you mix Paul Oakenfold, Jon Pleased Wimmin and Howie B among others.

Why do they discard the idea of spliffs? Lord knows they enjoy a little alteration with alcohol, and Adam said openly that he smoked a LOT after quitting drinking.

Also, could you find more about the band in this period by checking out Morleigh's career, or Gavin and Guggi?

Not sure on the date on this one, but they're at the beach and Michael Hutchens was there, so it looked right.

It's not a case of 'discarding the idea'. That isn't to say that one or more band members hadn't 'partaken' of the ganja. But, there just doesn't seem to be very solid evidence of marijuana being motivating force for Passengers and/or Pop.

This might be a good place to ask, has anyone identified exactly when Edge got rid of the ponytail? He had it at the opening of the Clarence in early 94 and it was gone by San Remo in 1995... if that's not way to obsessive a question?

:reject: I think I have it down as somewhere between July 1995 to November. But I also think it might have been as early as Sept 1995 because I thought there was a picture of Edge at a different event. This might be the San Remo thing you mentioned. You'll have to refresh me on what that was.

The first clip is our favorite Bono and Edge drunk moment. From what I remember it was from the summer of 1995. You can sort of tell that Edge is at the very start of the pornstache but still has a ponytail.

Totally love the drunk Amnesty party interview. Wish it didn't cut off where it does Well, we say drunk...

That feels really nice, doesn't it? Doesn't it, The Edge?
It certainly does. It feels really nice.

I was wrong, the event I'm thinking of was in Modena, September 1995. He seems to have the full Pop look going on already, way earlier than I thought.

ah yes.... I can't believe I forgot about the Modena concert. I knew there was something in September of 1995! I used to listen to One from this over and over. San Remo was 2000. Anyways, so yep, it must have been about August 1995 that he made the big change.

So glad I'm not the only obsessive in the room! I'd love to know what precipitated that change.

I was in that Amnesty Party. It was pathetic to see how Lisa Stansfield thought she was a superstar and then everyone ignored her. Those were the crazy days when we used to go to Bono's house ala stalker way in order to show him our shitty demos (sic). I can definitely tell you they were fun times indeed... at least for me.

I've always been fascinated by the Amnesty video look. I looooved how he looked during Zoo TV and then to see him a few years later, still with long hair, but no goatee was so weird. I've never been into JT Edge so it was a little disappointing to see that he went back to that look. But I guess not really because it appears he only shaved his goatee to begin Pop Edge. You can't see it in the picture above but you can sort of see the pornstache in the video. I think he looks AMAZING in the Modena video. So freaking hot.:drool::drool:

On that sixth picture, was that the last time The Edge shaved his beard?

1994-1995. U2 finding their love for Nice, France. Vacationing with models and other rock stars, like Michael Hutchence.

...and Passengers.

Larry hated it. I love it! Come on, Lardence... Pavarotti made an appearance on the album! What is NOT to love about that?

I think that there are some great atmospheric sonic goodness on that album. OK, so 'Elvis Ate America' might not be high art. But for the most part, there are some great pieces of music there.

I for one, would love for there to be a 'Soundtracks 2' album. I could understand the 4-5 years between U2 albums a bit better if they did release, even if via U2.com only, some of the experiments.

Any who... For some, in a pre-internet age, U2 seemed to vanish post Zoo 1993 shows until the K-Mart Pop Press conference. That just wasn't true. There was some down time. There was some family time. There was some just plain fuck around time. And then... there was some experimental time. Some dreaming it all up again time. There was a time for Passengers and Pavarotti... a time of Adam vocalizing on Your Blue Room... And all of that was valid work and play, in this humble fans opinion.

Pavarotti was certainly there on one of the high points, and I'd think Larry would even acknowledge that too. In terms of 'greatness' though, I don't think he's too far off the mark by saying it wasn't up there. Some great 'parts'? For sure. And maybe at the least some 'interesting' pieces of music with a few misses as well.

Beauty is in the eyes (ears) of the beholder.

In that, I think POPis one of their most ambitious albums. I think that the cover killed sales. I get what they were going after (Warhol, consumerism, etc) but I think that album art turned some off.

I think the kitsch nature of the Discotheque video turned some off; they didn't get the humor at all.

I also think that the mix killed POP. Given another week or two, it'd have been a far better album. I heard similar about AB - That it was about finished, they revisited a few things at the very end - and BAM = Great sounding album of great songs.

So yes... the mid-to late 1990's had more action than one might think, for the members of U2. And in that Passengers was a part of what was to become POP.

Passengers has great moments. It lead to POP. POP has great moments. And if they'd gotten the mix better... it'd have more great moments and have become a great album.

Agree... Pop is in my Top 5
