Hey everyone! I was wondering if you could give me a little help with and English assignment? I have to find a poem that has the same meaning as the lyrics to a song. I really want to use a U2 song, but I'm having a hard time matching U2's lyrics to a poem. If you guys have any ideas, please share them! The only rule is the poem has to be by an American author. Thanks! :wave:

P.S. What do you think of "Thanatopsis",written by William Cullen Bryant and "One Tree Hill?"

interesting choice of "Thanatopsis" and "One Tree Hill"... I'd have to go back and read them both again... but it seems to me like that could work...

I also know that Bono has read A LOT of Charles Bukowski's work (ex. "Those days run away like wild horses over the hill"), perhaps you could check out some of his poetry?

:wave: good luck! (and might I add, what a cool English assignment!)

NEUTRAL TONES

by: Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)

E stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod,
--They had fallen from an ash, and were gray.
?
Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove
Over tedious riddles solved years ago;
And some words played between us to and fro--
On which lost the more by our love.
?
The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing
Alive enough to have strength to die;
And a grin of bitterness swept thereby
Like an ominous bird a-wing?.
?
Since then, keen lessons that love deceives,
And wrings with wrong, have shaped to me
Your face, and the God-curst sun, and a tree,
And a pond edged with grayish leaves.

This could go "One" or "So Cruel" perhaps?
