What on earth do the lyrics of trasure have to do with pete the chop, a bloke who asked u2 to write a song about him?

The lyrics to

TREASURE (WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PETE THE CHOP?)

I like to smile
But I like to mostly stay with you
I like good times
But I can't feel this without you
By my song
The heart is in the place
I sing this song
Probably so

If I could sigh
I'd tell the world I'd felt with you
I like the time
I like the feeling when
I feel you in my arms
I'll take you in my hand
I'll let you go
Somebody save me
Somebody save me

Sing it
Sing my, sing my song
We sing the same old song loud

Smile...though your heart breaks in two
Touch me...when will I be with you

I like good times
But I can feel it's going wrong
You sing the same old song
Now I think it's time to get it right

Sing it out, sing out...
Sing this same old song

If I could swim, I'd swim in circles
If I could drown, I'd, I'd drown with you
If I had enough of my life
I can't tell
If I had enough of you

Wow, nice song, but hard to interpret an overall intention and meaning

This is going off of memories of a book I read about U2 around 10 years ago, but I think the instrumentation or 'music' to the song was originally for a song called 'Pete the Chop'. I believe that 'Pete the Chop' was a song U2 were keeping in case they ever needed a sure fire radio hit/singe to release. They never used it, so they put some different lyrics to it and released it as a b-side.

I believe the (Whatever happened to Pete the Chop) part was just an inside joke for the band.

Hope that helps. (I also hope I remembered it correcty, or that the info was even true in the first place)

Thanks for that info...does shed some light on the mystery......

its just i read that that pete the chop was a friend of a friend of the band who asked a youthful u2 to make a song about him, so they did.....but the lyrics hardly reveal much about the true person called pete the chop
