Is there more than one version of Treasure?

The lyrics in my book U2 - The complete songs, seem to differ completely from the B-side version I've got.

Maybe it would help if you posted what you had and what you've seen that was contradictory?

I'll try to do a whole transcript.

It's mainly the chorus that's different.

The written lyrics say "sing your favourite song"

and yet he clearly sings " sing that same old song" the whole way through it..

There are other lines as well

Ah, I see... okay, here's the old U2.com lyrics (haven't looked at the new U2.com's one, they may be the same):

Treasure - U2.com

I like to smile but I'd most like the smile to stay with you.
I like good times but I can't feel them without you.
By my side, the heart is the place we have to find.
Jump up beside me, jump up beside me.

If I should die
I couldn't tell the world how I felt about you
And I'd like more time
To describe the feeling when
I feel you in my arms
Take you in my hand
How could I let you go?
Somebody save me
Somebody save me from myself.

'Cause you sing, you sing my favourite song
'Cause you sing, my favourite song

I like good times
But the better they are the better chance they will go wrong
You sing my favourite song
You sing my favourite song

If I could swim, I'd swim in circles.
And never drown
If I did, I'd drown with you
If I had enough of my life,
It would be because
I hadn't enough of you
Then I would die
Die... die... die... die.

Another version:

I like to smile
But I like to most after you
I like good time
But I can't feel this without you

But this song
The heart is in my place
I sing this song
But-but this song
Buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh

If I could sigh
I'd tell the world I found my jewel
I'd like the time
I like the feeling when I feel you in my arms
I take you in my hand
I'll let you go
Jump up beside me
Jump up beside me

Love
I have my good time
Sing it
Sing my, sing my song
You sing that same old song of love

Smile
Though your heart breaks in two
Touch me
When will I be with you?

I like good times
But I can feel it's going wrong
You sing that same old song
And I think it's time we get it right

Sing it out
Sing it out
Sing this same old song

If I could swim
I'd swim in circles
And I could drown
I, I'd drown with you
If I had enough of my life
I'd give in
If I had enough of you
I'd wanna drown

I like to try (my, oh my)
I like to make a rhyme (my, oh my)
I like to walk (my, oh my)
I like to beat myself up
On mistakes

I like to smile
But I'd like to most savour you
I like good time
But I can't feel this without you
By my song
My heart is in my place
I'll sing this song
Probably so
Proba-ba-ba-ba-ba

If I could sign
I'd tell the world I slept with you
I like good time
I like the feeling when
I feel you in my arms
I take you in my hand
I'll let you go
Jump up beside me
Jump up beside me
(Yeah, I like good time)

Sing it
Sing that same old song, yeah
We sing that same old song loud

Smile
Though your heart breaks in two
Touch me
When will I be with you?

I like good time
But I can feel it's going wrong
You sing that same old song
And I think it's time to get it right
Sing it out, sing it out
Sing the same old song

If I could swim, I'd swim in circles
And I could drown, I'd, I'd drown with you
If I had enough of my life
I'd give in
If I had enough of you
I'd wonder...

My oh my / ...how to be strong
My oh my / Enough to be alright
My oh my / I'd want the telly on
Oh my / I'd like to pick myself above mistakes

My opinion is that it wasn't a very good vocal take - in other words, Bono screwed up the words (some of what he clearly sings doesn't make much sense). I've only heard of one studio version, and the 'official' lyrics are very obviously not what is sung (it's close, though, and the official lyrics skip the last verse altogether).

This is what happens when all dissent is killed by corporate bigwigs who are out for making a fucking dollar. It ends up with misleading information and fuck it I'm not going to rant right now...

grrrrrroat

Ta for that, explains a lot..

Apart from the bit where Bono sings horrendously out of tune, it's a great song, I'm surprised it never made it to an album.

:)

The original song, Pete the Chop was pretty cool too, though it also didn't go anywhere. But then, there have been alot of great U2 songs that never made an album but were featured as b sides.

If I remember the story correctly, Pete The Chop was a song that failed to make Boy that the record company kept in case they needed a quick single. Treasure is that song, played backwards, with Bono singing different lyrics.

That's just what I've heard. I haven't listened to either recently enough to know if Treasure is Pete The Chop backwards. I bet goat knows. I'm also willing to bet I'm totally wrong about Treasure being Pete The Chop in reverse.

Well, Treasure is not Pete the Chop reversed. Pete the Chop has a bit faster tempo and yes, different words, but it is basically the same musically (think Native Son vs. Vertigo or Trevor vs. Touch). I'll put the only version of Pete the Chop that I have up in the Music On the Internet forum (it's a crappy live mp3) and maybe someone will post a better one.

Just to add further confusion

I see that in 1980, they twice played Pete the Chop Live.

Anyone know if they actually played treasure or was it just pete the chop.

Thanks for the clarification, rivergoat! Glad to have the story about Pete The Chop corrected before I go spouting it off to anyone like it's fact, heh.

Ellay, the two performances you mention are the only known performances of Pete The Chop (we have a mere four setlists that date from before the commencement of the Boy Tour). The reincarnation as Treasure was never played.
