Single Greatest Line Of Any U2 Song

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Where do you guys download Mercy? Obviously, it's not a version that has been released commercially like their other songs.

"Sometimes you get naked on your own" ;)

My friend heard that line when I took him to see U23D a few weeks ago.

How can I hurt when I'm holding you?
"...Sweeeeeeeeeet Caroliiiiiiiiiiiiiiine!"

lmao, only joking.

I've got so many favourite lyrics, couldn't possibly pick just one!

"What you've got, they can't steal it; no they can't even feel it."
"Stay safe tonight."
"We're one, but we're not the same... we get to carry each other..."
"You're the reason I sing...you're the reason why the opera is in me..."
"You've been all over, and it's been all over you."

I've got to say it's:

one bowl, and it's runnin' low...
you give me one box now its all i've got...
one bowl, and we've got to share it, got to share it baby...

Most of Gone really

"You wanted to get somewhere so badly
You had to lose yourself along the way."

and

"What you thought was freedom is just greed."

"love makes strange enemies"
"i want to see your thoughts take shape and walk right out"
"you're kept awake dreaming someone else's dream"

Okay I'm done now :D

Not the biggest fan of the song but always thought that

"You wanted violins, but you got Nero"

was a cracking line.

Everyone artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration, and sing about their grief

That line ALONE gets him into the Rock and Roll hall of fame! haha

I'm pretty sure it's VIOLENCE not VIOLINS.

"You wanted violence, and you got Nero."

Nero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No it's definitely violins, that's the whole point of the line.

From the link you provided:

Nero's rule is often associated with tyranny and extravagance.[3] He is known for a number of executions, including those of his mother[4] and adoptive brother, as the emperor who "fiddled while Rome burned",[5] and as an early persecutor of Christians.

Theres a line there that says:

Nero's rule is often associated with tyranny and extravagance.[3] He is known for a number of executions, including those of his mother[4] and adoptive brother, as the emperor who "fiddled while Rome burned"
So I spose the violin line could still stand. (though it has a note that infact he was a Lyre player, though it seems to be a famous quote)

Exactly, "He is known for a number of executions, including those of his mother[4] and adoptive brother..."

The line says you wanted violence/violins AND you got Nero...meaning Nero gave you what you wanted....

After listening to it a few more times, I couldn't make out whether it was violins or violence, so I'm going with violence bc it makes more sense to me...lol.

What we could agree on is that they should release the song officially and give us the official lyrics.

Well we DO have the official lyrics and in Bono's own handwriting it is VIOLINS.

The lyrics to Mercy are handwritten in the book from the special edition of HTDAAB. So there is no debate at all. It is violins. :)

Ha, I stand corrected...But I will still say violence when I sing along...haha.

"Earth, sky, sea and rain
Is she coming back again?
Men of straw snooker hall
Words that build or destroy
Dirt dry bone sand and stone"

"And I, like a firework, explode
Roman candle, lightening lights up the sky"

They look for you, but your spirit is in the air
Baby, you're nowhere

I love all the lyrics from One Tree Hill, but this part strikes me the most:

And in the world a heart of darkness
A fire zone
Where poets speak their heart
Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
From the ground

Back
Top Bottom
