Single Greatest Line Of Any U2 Song

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

These resonated with me the most:

"September, streets capsizing
Spilling over down the drains
Shards of glass, splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain

October, talk getting nowhere
November... December... remember
Are we just starting again? "

I remember when 9/11 happened this was all I could think about.....And when I saw U2 in November 2001 (Los Angeles); Bono and The Edge, they performed an acoustic performance of Please, it was just mesmerizing (and eerie).

I remember Bono even made a comment about the song being relevant today because of what had happened or something to that effect....

summer rain "when you stop taking chances you stay where you sit,you won't live any longer but it will feel like it" and
"it's not why your running,it's where your going,it's not what your dreaming but what your gonna do.It's not where your born,it's where you belong. It's not how weak but what will make you strong"

I totally LOVE the lyrics of Summer Rain, it's such an underappreciated song. "If you stop seeing beauty you start growing old/The lines on your face are a map to your soul". So true.

this line / verse is my absolute favorite

you want heaven in your heart
but you take what you can get
'cause it's all that you can find
but you know there's something more
but tonight, tonight, tonight

I remember
When we could sleep on stones
Now we lie together
In whispers and moans
When I was all messed up
And I had opera in my head
Your love was a light bulb
Hanging over my bed

and

I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.

I'm sure it's already been said, but "love is blindness, I don't want to see" is a pretty brilliant line. I'll think of some more.

its hard to pick...but the first 2 that come to mind are:

Love makes no sense of space and time-miracle drug

when you hold on to something so tight you've already lost it-dirty day

I'm sure I'll come back with a huge list of my favourites, but for now I'll go with my #1, which hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread:

And I, like a firework explode
Roman candle lightning lights up the sky

Simply stunningly beautiful.

Mercy had some really good lyrics, (although most of the verses suck, I mean the water and telescope line? WTF?!) But my favorite line from any song, (not just any U2 song) is:

Love is justice, not charity.
Love brings with it clarity

More from Mercy:

I'm rippin' the stitches
You got two hands to rub
I'm in the ditches
Of someone else's love
Love is when I lie
Love puts the blue back in my eye
Love will come again
I'll be gone again...

From Like a Song...

Angry words won't stop the fight.
Two wrongs won't make it right.
A new heart is what I need,
Oh God, make it bleed,
Is there nothing left?

and from Love Is Blindness:

Love is clockworks and cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel.

I remember
When we could sleep on stones
Now we lie together
In whispers and moans
When I was all messed up
And I had opera in my head
Your love was a light bulb
Hanging over my bed

Cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice

Blessings aren't just for the ones who kneel, luckily

CHANGED MY MIND COMPLETELY!

"Mercy" :heart:

Love is when I lie
Love puts the blue back in my eye
Love has come again
I am gone again
Love's got to be with the weak
Only then love gets a chance to speak
Love will come again

Even though all the lyrics of this song are poignant to me.

Too hard. Not a line, but amazing passages:

HEARTLAND

"Mississippi and the cotton wool heat
Sixty-six a highway speaks
Of deserts dry
Of cool green valleys
Gold and silver veins
Of the shining cities"

i totally agree with you on heartland
i also love all the lyrics to bad and running to standstill
and this from mothers of the disappeared

"midnight our sons and daughters
were cut down and taken from us
hear there heart beat
we hear there heart beat"

who else finds mothers of the disappeared haunting

"....And you can swallow
Or you can spit
You can throw it up
Or choke on it ...."

(this is just one of many-but first came to mind because I was listening to this song yesterday)

Um, it's:

"Hide yourself in someone else
Don't find yourself in me"

Well the lyric sounded better the way I "misheard" it. Perhaps that should be moved to the misheard lyrics then. Since it was a mistake, I guess my lyrics would have to be:

"Time won't leave me as I am, Time won't take the boy out of this man."

...qg

Well the lyric sounded better the way I "misheard" it.

Maybe you think so...

When he sings "don't find yourself in me" he's being humble and telling that person to be themselves. Your way would be quite arrogant saying, look to me be more like me."

That line shows up again in another form in 'Love Rescue Me'.

I would have to go with ALL of "Stay" and "Bad". Absolutely gorgeous.

Those two songs capture the emotion, beauty and spontaneity of some on Bono's lyrics.....Before he started over-analyzing the lyrics and they were at their most pure.

Just listen to the man talk lately! His normal sentences and winged speeches are more beautiful than most of his lyrics from the 00s. Not to say they are bad lyrics though.....

Anyway! The line that always makes me smile is that one from "Trying to throw your arms around the world":

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle."

Amen!

Nope! I've heard it before-- I just like how it was kind of randomly thrown into the song. It makes me happy :D

As a single stand alone line that says it all without needing any other lines to support it I think this one says it all:

"See the stone set in your eyes"

I love how much that one sentence says. Perfectly portraying something that was once hot, turning cold and hard.

brilliant

It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief
