Single Greatest Line Of Any U2 Song

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

"I've been sleeping in the street again
like a stray dog
I've been trying to feel complete again
but you're gone and so is God"

It's a very hard pick, but the one line that always comes to mind first when I'm asked this kind of question is: Don't let the bastards grind you down. I guess it's because it's so simple, but so true.

And while these may not be the greatest lyrics of all U2's songs,
they've seemed eerily prophetic to me, especially over the last few years:
And it's true we are immune,
when fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry,
we eat and drink while tomorrow they die.

Great thread, by the way.

Walk On - "And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring
And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind."

"And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong."

Smile - "Decaying I'm praying
You are my abbot
I need the ground to kneel upon
And love can't be your song
I don't want to see you smile."

But really:

"And yes, it's true, we are immune..."
"It takes just seconds to say goodbye..."
"We're still building, then buuuuuuuurning down love..."
"I can't live... with or without you."
"Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief... all kill their inspiration, and sing about their grief."
"One life, with each other... sisters, brothers."
"See the world in green and blue [...] After the flood, all the colors came out..."
"Unos, dos, tres, catorce!" (okay, not really)
"Neon heart, dayglo eyes... a city lit by fireflies."
"Oh can't you see what love has done, what it's doing to me?"
All of Mercy

I think you mean:

You are my air but
I need the ground to kneel upon."

Love those lyrics. too!

Could never pick just one line. There are so many masterpieces, but heard A Man and A Woman today. The whole song is beautiful, but I like this one-

You can run from love
And if it's really love it will find you
Catch you by the heel
But you can't be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?

I can't choose just a single line, but as I'm listening to Pop at the moment these came to my mind:

MOFO
Lookin' for a sound that's gonna drown out the world
Lookin' for the father of my two little girls
Got the swing, got the sway, got my straw in lemonade
Still looking for the face I had before the world was made

DO YOU FEEL LOVED
With my fingers as you want them
With my nails under your hide
With my teeth at your back
And my tongue to tell you the sweetest lies...

Love is coming, pushing and shoving
In the belly of a woman
Heavy rythm taking over
To stick together a man and a woman

STARING AT THE SUN
Summer streching on the grass
Summer dresses pass
In the shades of a willow tree
Creeps a crawling over me
Over me and over you
Stick together with God's glue

Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station

Your face pressed up against the glass

"Mother...am I still your son
You know I've waited for so long to hear you say so
Mother...you left and made me someone
Now I'm still a child, no one tells me no"

"And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing"

"And the battle's just begun,
There's many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts,
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn
apart."

"You broke the bonds and you
Loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believed it"

Wow.

There are many.....but the one (no pun intended) that hits out at me is....

we're one, but we're not the same, we got to carry each other, carry each other...

This is actually one of my favorite lines as well, but for another reason. He actually sings we GET to carry each other, which puts a whole different spin on the line then GOT to. If it was got, he would be implying that it is our obligation to help others, where it isn't. By saying get, to me of course, is saying that we a given the gift of being able to make the choice of helping others, which is much more important then doing it out of obligation. Just how I see it though.

There are so, so many (most already listed), but I also really love these lyrics from Bad:

"If I could through myself
Set your spirit free"...

and, of course, all of ASOH. :)

Also, the lyrics from Bullet (in addition to being incredibly poetic) evoke an incredibly chilling imagery:

"In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails
Into the souls on the tree of pain

From the firefly, a red orange glow
See the face of fear
Running scared in the valley below...

...In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome

You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses
See the flames higher and higher"

... It doesn't get much more powerful than that!

you got to cry without weeping
talk without speaking
scream without raising your voice...

man, I get chills very time!

In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they'd learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy.
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy.

Simply amazing!

and every single line from So Cruel

Great line from SIAMYCGOO, probably the best followed by "I wasn't jumping...for me it was a fall/It's a long way down to nothing at all"

So Cruel has some of my favorite lines ever in it and means a lot to me, but come on, it's "every single line from So Cruel except 'bleeding like a cut.'" What a bad/flat analogy.

In no particular order:
1.) All the promises we break from the cradle to the crave when all is want is you-All I Want Is You
2.)Free at last they took your life, they could not take your pride-Pride(In the name of love)
3.) The real battle just begun to claim the victory Jesus won on a Sunday Bloody Sunday
4.)If I could you know I would If I could I would let it go-Bad
5.)I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky- One Tree Hill
6.)I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside-Where the streets have no name
7.)Time wont leave me as I am but time wont take the boy out of this man- City of Blinding Lights
8.)If God would send his angels, if God would send a sign, and if God would send his angels, would everything be alright?
and finally, all of A man and a woman, walk on, so cruel and kite.

One, Streets, Lemon, The Fly, One Tree Hill, Gone, Beautiful Day, and Mercy and full of 'em.

But I'd say the best three are "the city's aflood, and our blood turns to rust," "We're One, but we're not the same," (has anyone ever read Shadows on the Grass, by chance?), and "Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief."

Great going back and reading all of these again. They really do have some amazing lyrics.

One that still gets me no matter how many times I hear it...

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

i'm quite a fan of almost all of please, notably:

"love is big, it's bigger than us
but love is not what you're thinking of"

whether or not thats the best line in a song of theirs ever, im not sure, but it's up there for me.
