I realy like the lyrics in that song, but english is not my first language and I can't "hear" what Bono is singing in few places.

Can someone post the full lyrics to that song in this thread? Please?

I thought the line went 'on my word, I did not take his life' makes more sense in the context of the verse I thought, maybe's not!

If the song is indeed about Leonard Peltier (as rumored), who is in prison for (supposedly) shooting an FBI officer, it's most definitely, "I did not take his life".

If it is about Peltier, then the song is a protest against the government. It certainly sounds like it is anyways.

An excellent reference site about him is here:

I can understand why U2 would want to change this song into Vertigo - it's hard to get a hit song anymore that makes such a specific political statement, and the beats and rhythm seem more tailor-made for radio.

On the other hand, there are some fantastic lyrical ideas in here and I wish they could have done something else with it - this song deserves to be heard!!

just my two cents

I like the background vocals on Native Son way better than on Vertigo on the chorus.
