Hello, hello.

Can anyone help me with some information on Miss Sarajevo? My friend needs to give a presentation on the song and how it ties in with the Bosnian conflict. Any quotes, interpretations, articles, ideas, etc. would be great.

Thanks!

Miss Sarajevo was included as part of the passengers collaboration.

Bono says that for ages Luciano Pavarotti had been bugging him to work together, even to the point where Pavarotti was calling Bono's home daily.

It refers to a beauty contest in Sarajevo during the war in Yugoslavia. The contest was set up as an act of defiance against Serbian attacks.

U2's involvement with the conflict was during the Zoo TV tour. As part of their trawl around the airwaves during the concert, the band would regularly cross-over live to people affected by the fighting in Sarajevo.

At that time, the Yugoslav conflict was confined to the inner pages of the newspapers, and rarely made it to the televsion news.

U2 wanted to highlight what was going on actually inside Europe, and make the point that nothing was being done to stop it.

At that time, little did we know that full blown genocide was taking place, and horrendous crimes against humanity were being carried out at concentration camps like Omarska.

The irony of the whole thing was that by the time the Zoo tv tour reached Europe, the war HAD made it to the front pages, and U2 were accused of exploiting people's suffering for their own end.

But mass media and manipulation was what zoo tv was all about. So it kind of came full circle.

Miss Sarajevo was played live at Popmart in Sarajevo in 1997.

Bono says that in Bosnia, people remember the start of the war because it came just after the winter olympics in sarajevo.

And people remember the end of the war, because it came just before .... popmart.
