The shackles are undone
The bullet’s quit the gun
The heat that’s in the sun
Will keep us when its done

The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grain is now a groove
All debts are removed

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
Soul in a strip tease
Hate brought to its knees

Sky over our head
Can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart
And out of my head

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Please don’t ever let me out of here!
I’ve got no shame, oh no, oh no!

Oh can’t you see what love has done
Oh can’t you see…
Oh can’t you see what love has done
What it’s doing to me

I know I hurt you and I made you cry
Did everything but murder but you and I
But love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize

Oh can’t you see what love has done
to every broken heart
Oh can’t you see what love has done
for every heart that cries
love let a window in the skies
and to love I rhapsodize
Oh can’t you see

meaning of Window in the Skies

i realize that everyone can get different messages out of the same song, but i think that bono has a clear message in mind on this song.

wonder why he names the song "window in the skies"? why would he use that minor lyric as the title? here's why:

he asks over and over again "can't you see what our love has done?" then at the end of the song (and in the title), he answers the question: "love left a window in the skies". the meaning of this is simple: love shows us the face of God. love is the evidence of God's truth. love is a window to God.

christian imagery is all over this song. think of the crucifixion ("the debt has been removed", "the stone it has been moved", "the shackles are undone")

you "can reach the sky" (sky=God) if "you let me in your heart" (if you learn to love).

this song is about God and love, and it claims that they are one and the same

Great post, I think you're right.

It's a lot like With or Without You in the regard that it can be interpreted as a spritual song, of a romantic love song. Personally, I've listen to With or Without You are a spiritual song and Window in the Skies as a romantic love song.

I agree! I get a spiritual message out of it too based on the lyrics you mentioned and the end "for every heart that cries...love left a window in the sky." It's amazing! I think it will end up becoming one of my favorites!

Currently Listening: "So Cruel"/U2

I'm hearing "the grave is now a groove"

Yup! I hear that too. I noticed about the 20th time I played it. LOL. I've been listening carefully, and it's definitely "grave". I think that makes it pretty clear that especially in the first verse he's talking about his relationship with Jesus.

Soul in a strip tease

If you let me in your heart
And out of my head

Did everything but murder you and I

And to love I rhapsodize

My favourite lines so far.

I see it as a bitterweet love song.

That said I can see how the "law has been disproved, stone it has been moved, and all debts removed" lines could be Bible inspired.

its definetly a bittersweet love song, another anti love song as such.....

its brilliant, but i think its about a relationship gone bad and looking back on it

Agreed - "Grave" fits better with the context...

"The stone - it has been moved" - a pretty obvious reference to the stone of Christ's tomb being moved.

"The grave is now a groove" - the grave is synonymous with the tomb.

"All debts are removed" - again, referencing Jesus pardoning sins with his death and resurection.

I can see it as somewhat of an anti-war song (first part):

The shackles are undone
The bullet’s quit the gun
The heat that’s in the sun
Will keep us when its done

The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grave is now a groove
All debts are removed

The heat that’s in the sun
Will keep us when its done:huh:

Please, anyone! When what is done?

Thanks:wink:

did anyone else think about Africa on this one?

The lines that got it for me are the removed debts and the idea that "our love" or our aid has done so much in Africa. The first 8 lines also seem like they could apply to Africa too, what with the move towards peace "bullets quitting gones" "shakles being undone."

let me know if im the only one that thinks this, but perhaps it could have been the double meaning that bono was searching for!

Slightly updated lyrics, based on above info etc.:

The shackles are undone
The bullet’s quit the gun
The heat that’s in the sun
Will keep us when there's none

The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grave is now a groove
All debts are removed

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
The soul in a strip tease
Hate brought to its knees

The sky over our head
You can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart
And out of my head

Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Please don’t ever let me out of here!
And I’ve got no shame, oh no, oh no!

Oh can’t you see what love has done
Oh can’t you see…
Oh can’t you see what our love has done
What it’s doing to me

I know I hurt you and I made you cry
Did everything but murder you and I
But love left a window in the skies
And to love I rhapsodize

Oh can’t you see what love has done

Oh can’t you see what love has done

Oh can’t you see

You know what, I'm tempted, given the religious imagery in the first verse (which I think is undeniable), to speculate that the lyrics to the verse might even be 'Oh can't you see what THE LORD/ OUR LORD has done?' instead of 'Love'. Is this deliberately ambiguous, I wonder?

Not that it really matters, I suppose, given that Bono uses Love and God interchangably in so many songs. You can often just substitute 'God' when you hear 'Love' in a U2 song and it makes a lot more sense.

Yeah as somebody said in another thread you can make Twist and Shout religious if you want. Look at the lyrics of this song in evolution (from the beachclip), it's pretty clearly a love song first and if its a religious song that's secondary. I mean you could take "he leaves it to his son" religiously but it follows "the bullet is in the gun" and is followed by "close the door" - not so religious.
