Does anyone know where I can find this song? (along with Fast Cars the two songs that aren't on the album for some reason.

So Fast Cars was on the Japan release, where was this song released???

As with everybody else, I think this is a great song.

Fast Car Lyrics...

My cell is ringing
No ID
I need to know who's calling

My garden's overgrown
I go out on my belly crawling
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news
To get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your face in a locket
Picture in my pocket
I take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
Will do me no good

I'm going nowhere
Where I am it is a lot of fun
They're in the desert to dismantle an atomic bomb
I watch them channel hop
Check the stocks
I'm in detox
I want the lot of what you've got
If what you've got can make this stop

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to be right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
Take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
Will do me no good

Don't you worry about your mind
Don't you worry about your mind
Don't you worry about your mind
Don't you worry about your mind

You should worry about the day
That the pain it goes away
You know I miss mine sometimes

There is no fiction
That will truly fit the situation
I'm documenting every detail
Every conversation
I'm not used to talking to somebody in their body
Look, there's somebody in a body, somebody in a body

Thanks, dandy! :dancing: U2 songs are rarely instant favorites for me -- they usually take a bit of time to grow. But I can already tell that this will quickly become one!

I don't see the point in even trying to discuss the lyrics of the song. Obviously it wasn't even finished yet, and was not yet intended for commercial release either as a b-side or an album track. So what your are basically discussing and gushing about are fragmented U2 works that are still unfinished or disjointed. I am sure when it comes out in released form one way or the other, it won't have the same lyrics. So there is no point to this discussion.

Cheers,

J

The Mercy lyrics must have gone completley over your head then, because they are actually pretty deep.

Or here's an idea. If you don't want to participate in a thread because you think it's pointless then DON'T. The thread doesn't require your approval.

I was drinking some wine
And it turned to blood
What's the use of religion
If you're any good
You know I'm weed-killer, honey
And your sugar
If you're the prosecution
I'd get away with murder
If you were ice
I'm water
And with your telescope
I can see further
We're binary code
A one and a zero
You wanted violins
And you got Nero
You're gravity
Searching for the ground
You're silence
Searching for a sound
You're heart is aching
You're heart is my home
It's fascinating
I know I'll never be alone

The typical metaphor/analogy/comparison/contrast songwriting schtick most songwriters employ.

When I'm rippin' the stitches
Without two cents to rub
I'm digging the ditches
Of someone else's luck

I really don't know what to say about this.

Love, hears, when I lie
Love puts the blue back in my eye
Love will come again
I'll be gone again
Again

How many songs making analogies about love do we need? This one sounds too boybandish.

If you hunger
Baby let me feed it
If you're heart is full
Baby let me bleed it
And happiness is for
Those who don't really need it
You love me, too much
You always loved me, too much

I see the Bon Jovi influence here - "I'll be the water when you get thristy baby, when you get drunk I'll be the wine".

I, I can't escape myself
I'll hear you talk
Feel nothing
I feel nothing
Fee-ee-ee-ee-eel!
I can hear so much
Feel nothing
I can hear so much
Feel, nothing

See "And if you listen I can't call/ and if you jump you just might fall/ and if I touch you/ You don't feel a thing" and also see "I feel numb." Obviously this has been said before already.

I am alive
Baby I'm born again, and again
And again and again
Again. . .

I like the way he said it in All Because Of You better. It was more complete.

All in all, the lyrics talk about themes that have already been previously covered by U2. Melodically, the intro sounds too similar to "The More You Live The More You Love" by A Flock Of Seagulls. Do we really need to know for the 9th time what love is all about?

By the way, I highly doubt if this song really is the "Mercy" U2 canned at the last minute that did not make the album. I'd say the real one may be more refined and that this is just an early wandering version.

Cheers,

J

Interesting theory... probably true.

this song has brilliant lyrics, brilliant melodies, brilliant sounds, brilliant colors....i can't quiet articulate what exactly this song is about, but i know i've felt that way...if that makes sense

Nero was known for being a savage and heartless Roman Emperor.

I read the lyrics to mean:

You wanted violins (love or sympathy)
And you got Nero (apathy or worse...)

nero = black (in Italian...)

whats great about the song is that it calls back that melancholy that seemed to come through with the 90's era, a gray sorta song that knows what makes you feel good but reminds you of the not-so-good stuff

I finally heard this song and I think this is the best description of the song. I miss '90's U2

does anyone know the reason why Mercy was cut from the track listing and made a B-side instead?

i think it should have been on the CD! i absolultey LOVE the song, and that would be have been so great! not like they were running out of space or anything, but i don't know.

i found this, but it stil doesnt' really clearly give the reason why it was cut from the album and made into a B-side.

It's now clear that one new song "Mercy," which Bono describes as "the best B-side you'll ever hear," was tossed from the album at a very late date, certainly after the book was completed. The lyrics for "Mercy," including the opening line of the song, "I was drinking some wine...and it turned to blood," are scripted around an image of Christ's battered face, painted blood red in an almost child-like style. One blue eye forms a Eucharistic host over a chalice that doubles as a bruise. The good news is that "Mercy," a sustained meditation of well over six minutes reminiscent of The Who in their Who's Next period, will be released to the public, eventually.

i agree it's the best b-side you'll ever hear! =)

apparently it's the b-side on the "all because of you" single
