I always hear this as Bono railing against himself and his profession. The way he says it sounds almost like he's thinking of himself as a sort of "slave" to rock n' roll. (In the derogatory sense of the word, that's what "******" means.)

About the "bumper sticker" comment. I always think of John Lennon's comment about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus. (And if you listen to the rest of Bono's rap, he makes many references to John Lennon, and, in fact, talks directly to him.) I take it to mean that for some reason rock n' roll has taken the place of Jesus (God, in all his forms) in many people's lives. It seems that Bono is crying out against that and attempting to show his incredulity in his own profession and in himself.

I have many more thoughts on this matter, but they don't form into coherent sentences when I'm typing, lol. Hope this helps some...

I always heard it this way:

Obviously for almost the whole rap, he's in character as Mark Chapman, the guy who shot John Lennon. He tells us that pretty clearly at the end ("what's my name? Mark Chapman.") He describes waiting outside their apartment for an autograph, his nervous state of mind, how he feels unworthy, and then he decides to shoot him.

At that point he screams
"Pull the trigger *on the* rock and roll ******
(He's) bigger than Jesus on a bumpersticker."

(You can hear the "on the" clearly on some other bootlegs.) So I think the entire statement refers to Lennon. And yes, with two allusions, one to Patti Smith's song and one to Lennon's claim that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus.
