So I'm studying for my exams and listening to R&H...and Heartland came on...is it true this was written while in a bus travelling South Dakota? Or was it North Dakota? (I think it was South, cos there isn't reason for them to be driving through North Dakota) I know it was a Dakota at least.

I listened to it and it really reminded me of South Dakota, the landscape and the beauty there. Which made me think of going to school there, and subsequently I got scared of leaving...but that's off subject...Anyway, I really think that a lot of U2's music really does a fantastic job of conveying an environment trhough tone.

Yessss.. Rattle and Hum and the Joshua Tree convey certain environments SO well. I always think of the desert, and back country America when I listen to them. It could be their most atmospheric work, IMO.

I always thought it was more about the Mississipi (spl) delta.

Either way it's dreamy.

I thought it was about the Delta as well.

It is one of my favorite U2 songs - so eerie and deep.

have they ever played it live???
