i never understood this last line of Fast Cars...

"I'm not used to talking to somebody in their body
Look, there's somebody in a body, somebody in a body"

any ideas?

A lot of peple are saying that he's so caught up in the media that he is not used to talking to real people any more I hope that makes sense.

Look at some of the other lyrics in the song, the first verse especially:

My cell is ringing, no ID
I need to know who's calling
My garden's overgrown
I go out on my belly crawling
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news to get to know the enemy

Now, to me, this song is about a very paranoid individual. A hermit, a recluse that has closed himself off from society. He stays in all the time and his only communication with the outside world is through media. TV, cell phones, etc. Thus, the final lines of the song reflect that.

Don't you worry about your mind,
You should worry about the day,
That the pain it goes away,
You know I miss mine sometimes.

For me this seems like a reference to anti-depressant drugs. They make the pain go away, but sometimes they can dull other emotions and make you wish you had the pain back just to feel something.

Edit: I didn't read the first post, which is probably a bit stupid when you think about it, but that's why this post has hardly any relevance.

You're right anyway though, Meghan. Especially considering the original version of the song being titled "Xanax & Wine". Xanax is a mild sedative/anti-anxiety/anti-depressant pill.

Exactly. If you ask me, Xanax and Wine is a better song. With that title & chorus, the lyrics make much more sense.

I think it's about somebody who's in love with somebody who doesn't want him, and now he's very depressed. Or something.

My garden’s overgrown
I go out on my belly’s crawling
Because of his mental state, he neglects everything else. Like his garden.

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is your picture in a locket
Your face in my pocket
Pretty obvious, it's about that girl he can't get.

Take a pill to stop it

Take me, save me from myself
I know that you’ve been good to me
Now I need you not to be
Wake me, I fear I can’t be asleep
I’m buying things I cannot afford
I’m on a high diving board
Two drugs keeping me dry
Xanax and wine
He uses Xanax and wine to stop this feeling.

Etc. These lyrics are among the easiest to understand. Nevertheless, I think they're very good. :)

...or it could be about the people already in his life, that since he's dulled his emotions so much he no longer feels anything for them.

Hey, I hadn't though about that possibility yet. :hmm:

However, not every song he writes has to be about his dad.

No, but I think this one is about his dad and his feelings/experiences when he was grieving. Certainly not the only meaning/interpretation of the song though...
