Which lyric would you have someone read...

No, nothing makes sense
Nothing seems to fit
I know you'd hit out
If you only knew who to hit
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in
'Cause I need it now
To take the cup
To fill it up
To drink it slow
I can't let you go
I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that

I'm also partial to the A Sort of Homecoming lyric posted already, and The Unforgettable Fire lyric also posted.

For a single line (or couplet), I am slayed by

"Love...slowly slips away / Love...has seen its better day"

Fuck Bono has written some incredible lyrics. This thread is immense.

I would plump for Running to Stand Still or Promenade, but this one deserves mention too:

October, and the trees are stripped bare of all they wear.
What do I care?
October, and kingdoms rise.
And kingdoms fall.
But you go on and on.

Now I'm religiously not religious. But if I was I'd want to write that lyric.

what's amazing to me is he wrote some of his most evocative, if not sensical, in the rush to put words to TUF. I love that style of his...but when he finally decided to write more literal and personal, I thought he did a fantastic job, like with Acrobat or Please or Gone or some of the SOI stuff that gets hammered by some, but was at times solid storytelling. I get he doesn't feel most comfortable in the literal or the biographical, and tends to even take a situation like Greg Carroll's death and write a song that is inspired by the man, but does little to actually celebrate that particular life. But he has shown the capacity.
