What is the stupidest decision U2 has ever made?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Aren't you supposed to be the numbers guy?

Gross is an utterly useless number.

It was in a theater three times the size of Book of Mormon.

Spiderman had to sell out every night for about 10 years just to break even, due to its incredible production costs, not to mention the $75 million in pre-production investments.

Spiderman's net loss for its investors was in the range of $60 million dollars. It was a complete, unmitigated financial disaster any way you draw it up.

For comparison, Book of Mormon cost 10 million to make, and was profitable by its 9th month, and continues to sell out every show, on Broadway and on tour, to this day.

Yeah agreed.

The fact that I managed to get half priced tickets on the day at Christmas time and couldn't get any for Book Of Mormon two months in advance says it all really.

I enjoyed the show but it definitely was one that's ambition outweighed the talent on offer.

Worst thing they ever did? Dropped some mediocre dad rock on iTunes and called it an album.

Second worst thing? Guy O'$eary.

I afford to disagree.

Mercy had a potential in its demo version, but it was a bit messy and too long. It was only the live version that made the song consistent and brilliant,
Ok.
I still consider that that's their stupidest artistic decision, but like any artistic decision, is totally subjective, what I think it was stupid someone else will think it was genious and viceversa. Just opinions and we all are "right" in a way at the same time.

Boots is a great song, with very different arabic vibe. Much more ambitious single than all the Stucks, Walk Ons or Vertigos. I adore the band for that direction that is captured on the album The problem of NLOTH was they were not brave enough to finish the record the way they started it in Morocco and they ended up polishing the songs in more radio friendly - classic - ATYCLB - way.
I considered Boots the stupid "career/business" decision.
You may disagree, but all your argument was not focused on the business/career side of that decision (releasing it as lead single) but totally focused on the "artistic" side of that decision: "great song", "arabic vibe", "polishing the songs in radio friendly way".
I'm not questioning it artistically.

If U2 had released Even Better Than The Real Thing as the 1st single from Achtung Baby it would have been disastrous and damaging as Boots. Great singles in their own right but bad marketing examples of their respective albums and not what the general audience should hear first.

Let me know when you start a new forum where real U2 fans can communicate with one another.

Anybody have a link to the U2 Hookers n' Blackjack forum please?

Am I allowed in if I unconsciously count cards in my head? :uhoh: Never dared to go to a casino because apparently it is frowned upon.. but I can't help it. Happens automatically.
