U2 - The Fourth Masterpiece

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Well, to me, U2 has always had 3 masterpieces.

Joshua Tree
War
Achtung Baby

In that order.

I then rate TUF and Boy in the top 5.

The rest float anywhere between last and just outside the Top 5, depending on the day! It is truly hard, I don't think U2 has ever made a bad album!

If I were to do it as instructed by the original poster:

Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Unforgettable Fire(Top 3, fixed)

1.)War
2.)Boy
3.)No Line On The Horizon

I don't think the label "masterpiece" can be attributed to an album that contains Red Light (or Refugee for that matter). While the album doesn't have to be flawless, it really shouldn't have any clunkers, either.

TUF was an impressive (and necessary) experiment, and while I wouldn't call it half-baked, it's not quite fully-formed and doesn't deserve M-status either.

The sum of SBS, NYD, and Drowning Man outweigh RD and Refugee.

I consider TTTYAATW a clunker, and AB to me is still a masterpiece.

We all know it will be Pop anyway.

Results so far don't come anywhere close to confirming this, heh. :hmm:

I have a vote tally going right now and it's a two horse race. One of the horses actually is close to 50% of the overall vote total, so we might not even need a run-off.

Unfortunately that's not how a masterpiece works.

However, I think the literal definition of a masterpiece is not the point of this thread.

Alright, I counted everything including those that only listed one or two albums, etc.

Round One:

Boy - 1
War - 5
Zooropa - 8
Pop - 4
ATYCLB - 2
HTDAAB - 1
NLOTH - 8

Round Two:

War - 6
Zooropa - 8
Pop - 5
All That You Can't Leave Behind - 2
No Line On The Horizon - 8

Round Three:

War - 6
Zooropa - 9
Pop - 5
No Line On The Horizon - 9

Round Four:

War - 8
Zooropa - 9
No Line On The Horizon - 12

Round Five:

Zooropa - 10
No Line On The Horizon - 15

Out of 31. I didn't count Salome's above post, but it wouldn't matter anyway. Unfortunately, No Line On The Horizon didn't clear the 50% + 1 mandate, so we're going to have a run-off.

I agree with 387. I'd put War in the top 3 ahead of TUF.
Yes Red Light is a clunker but each album has them (IMO.)

Back then there was such a thing as an album side and War's 1st side was
SBS
Seconds
NYD
Like a Song
Drowning Man:applaud:
Pretty close to the M word- IMO. The 2nd side fell off a little, but still.
To me- its the best of the 80s, by any artist.

To answer the question then my vote is
War
ATYCLB
Bomb

1. All That You Can't Leave Behind [Though, many reviews credit this as the 3rd masterpiece after Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby]
2. Pop
3. War

Personally I think those three are slightly better than The Unforgettable Fire. All are great though.
