You know what? The above just helped me realize they've been getting better - certainly more in touch - over the years. Albums/songs/lyrics about IRA, Terrorism, Reform may come across as ranting/contrived in today's world. I'm not quite as enthused about hard-line flag waving as perhaps I once might have been. I certainly see self-awareness and responsibility as the more effective - and human - paths to enlightenment.

They're right where they (and I) need them to be on agendas.

This album [No Line On The Horizon] gives promise that U2 will not follow, Rolling Stones/Dire Straits/Eagles/Pink Floyd/REM/numerous other successful acts over the years, down a path of becoming hackneyed, contrived, remnants of themselves. They might lose some of their popularity true, but I hope they continue to explore and evolve with the times.

As I craft this, it also occurs to me that Bono - criticized all too often for straying outside - is probably a driving force in bringing fresh topics/insight to the table. Very few people are as actively involved in such a diversity of affairs as he is. That perspective - combined with his insecurity issues (attention seeking, messianic-like persona, 2 inch boots/shoes etc) - helps them from falling victim to their own larger-than-life, greatness.

What a once-in-a-generation formula all of us have been privy to.

Now, if they would have just avoided the use of "rhythm of my soul" in Moment Of Surrender, it would have been up there on my list. Shades of Enrico Iglesias [brrrrr].

We're all a lot more conscious, self aware and informed than the 80's. Its right there in our televisions, our sense of humor, tastes, style and music. U2 is as in touch today as they always have been.

Revolution for revolution sake becomes tiresome very easily.

I see where you get at, but different times, you know? BTBS does sort of grate a little too close to home with its blatancy and stupid rap, though. But stuff like SBS - yeah, we had protest songs before, but how many sounded quite so militant and warlike as that? And I guess a whole bunch of people thought that it was dope that an Irish band were doing a song about the Troubles, rather than a patronising foreign artist, even though U2 weren't exactly ever dodging land mines and gun shots themselves. I do think there's a real time and place for that stuff, but the fact that the music itself was better (in my opinion) during the 80's outweighs subject matter.
