That line pretty much sums U2 up, in terms of what they do.
I don't think they are optimistic at all, that's just some subversive spin on why people like U2. (uplifting and other clichés) U2 songs are generally very dark, without becoming defaitist.
I agree. I also think that darkness or doubt can ultimately shed light on a situation...it’s all about the contrasts. Darkness often leads to contemplation, retrospection and sometimes, absolute appreciation. Cedars of Lebanon is brilliant in that regard...it’s far from euphoric, but it’s absolutely beautiful.
