agree that Fly should be ranked high if we are including impact with the song but as far as pure song quality this is a bit high. Excellent, career-changing song but is a bit choppy at parts.

Er, no. "By numbers" means lazy and formulaic. I don't want a good band like U2 to release lazy and formulaic songs when they have the ability to be so much more creative and interesting.

hmmm i think we just have different connotations of 'by numbers" I take it to mean something you would expect of u2... and we dont all consider formulaic a bad thing:wink:-and its also a well executed song

optomism is good sometimes, everything in moderation.
sometimes i need a lift; sometimes i want moody and dark

but i suppose we have different minds

I find the unexpected, experimental to be far more interesting than something a band has done a hundred times before. I'm not saying every U2 song has to be something new, but, there's a reason why I think The Unforgettable Fire is their best song.

I do believe that it has the worst set of lyrics ever written in the entire annals of rock music. Nobody, and I mean nobody should ever be paid for writing offal, banal, abhorrent, appalling, harrowing, ignominious, deplorable, afflictive, lamentable, lugubrious, calamitous, atrocious, repulsive, loathsome, execrable, deficient, dotterel, imbecilic, inane, insensate, ludicrous, obtuse, puerile, malapropos, incongruous, cretinous, gauche, platitudinous, vacuous, inept, and just-plain-dumb set of lyrics.
