Well, here's my list. I hope the inclusions of Wild Irish Rose and Alex Descends are OK, and I really don't see how ACD/ITH can be considered separately; in my mind (and on a few random editions of Boy, I believe), they're one seamless track. But if the original poster thinks this breaches any of his guidelines, I'd be happy to alter the list appropriately.

I'm curious to know how all of you went about making your lists. For my list, I went through each album (along with collections featuring b-sides and demos, using u2wanderer as a reference point) and picked out the necessary songs, and then separated them out into 5 separate tiers based on my first impression. If one tier contained more songs than the others, I shifted them around as necessary. From there, I sorted them within the tiers, which was easier for the first and last ones than everything in the middle, where almost all of the songs were equal.

That's a lot of effort to completely leave off the best song U2 has ever recorded.

Otherwise, I love that you have Zooropa #1

I've had a rough top 100 list for years, I made it back in the Popmart era and have revised every 2 years or so (back then I used it to make 'tapes') haha, but for some reason hadn't updated it since 2004. It was a great starting point. So I just went from there. I figure 3/4 of my top 50 has been the same (not in that particular order but songs) for the last 10 years.

To be fair, I was basing my list 100% on the studio versions of songs. Had I included live performances into my criteria, it would have made the cut.

6. Do You Feel Loved

as for how I made my list - I put Pop on there (a couple tracks didn't make the cut in the end though). Then I just tried to think of my other favourite tracks off the bat, then went through and looked at every album and tried to think of standout tracks for each. Then i just tried to arrange them in order starting with #1. There was no real system, just me thinkin'.

no Ultraviolet?.. no One? :sad::sad::sad:

Axver...you must have spent a good two years telling everyone in here that COBL was one of the greatest songs ever written. How has it fallen so far as to not make your top 50?

He found out what production was in the meanwhile and decided to dock the song a few gold stars.

Honestly, no overwhelming reason in particular; I just gradually lost interest in it. The production of the studio version really is pretty unsatisfying, especially compared to the live version, and the insubstantial lyrics have increasingly come to bother me. The near-total absence of songs from the current decade in my top 50 is due in no small part to the lyrics.

I still rank COBL as one of the top two HTDAAB songs, with One Step Closer.

The Fly revolutionised the U2 sound.

It is the singularly most important epic in the U2 catelogue.

It is U2's Bohemiam Rhapsody.

it is U2's Stairway to Heaven.

It is the song that links the first half of the U2 story to the second half of the U2 story.

The Fly is U2.

Yeah I gotta go, I'm running out of change. There's a lot of things, if I could I'd re-arange......

Here you mention something very important. Bono, PLEASE write us some great lyrics this time!!!

It's remarkable to see how weak the lyrics of the last two albums (and in between songs like 'Electrical Storm') are. Especially if you compare them to Joshua Tree / Achtung Baby / Pop.

Lies, all lies. COBL is introspective greatness left and right, a personal experience of Bono's eloquently jotted down on paper and later told through song. You people suck.

The opening lyrics of COBL are so bad:

"The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now"

Bono's rhymes are so terribly forced.

He's talking about himself obviously. The song has elements of his wife and what she means to him. In the album Boy he thought that if people could listen to him the world would be better. Now that he's in the thick of world issues he feels like he knows less today. It's just a play on words. Bono is doing more songs about his family so they may seem weird to others but when you are a die hard U2 fan you can see the inside references.

Bono is also obsessed with the past and misses his childhood. That's certainly a theme below the main theme of healing. Most bands are childish to a certain extent and it doesn't surprise me that Bono is a little childish too. When you get older and half you life has gone by you tend to look back at what you did in the past and have nostagic moments now and then. His father died and when someone like that passes away you WILL look at the past and want to recover some of it.

If U2 continues on in old age you are going to get more songs like that. Sorry to say.

What on earth are you talking about? The third line doesn't even rhyme with the other two, nor does he try to make it rhyme.

Plus, the first two lines are quite poignant, and very much in character for him, based on his usual writing style.

The first two lines are a forced rhyme. The first and third line are a half rhyme that also seems forced.

I understand what he is saying but it is so clunky and completely forced.
