Going over some old reviews of Achtung Baby, I happened upon this image from the Austin Chronicle's review of the album:

Anyone know where this came from? Did the band do an about-face on the cover after revealing it, sorta like they did with NLOTH to some degree?

That is the cover of the fold-out digipack. The pictures are a bit bigger (and there are three or four extra ones).

Huh, that's kinda cool. Glad that didn't become the cover, at any rate; the reds and blues of the photographs balanced themselves a lot better on the released CD copy. This one seems rather homogeneous. It's easy to take Achtung's cover for granted and tag it as just a bunch of random photographs, but they do work remarkably well together.

There were a number of covers U2 were considering before they settled on the ones they did. I think a bunch of them are floating out there somewhere.

Check out the "Stealing Hearts at a Traveling Show" book from Four5One for all sorts of alternative covers, early versions and mock-ups of every U2 album cover. It's awesome.
