Discotheque Appreciation Thread

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Which for some reason makes me think it's about drugs, well thats riddles for ya.

i wouldn't say it was about drug addiction but it is certainly about the joys of "disco biscuits", not just the "lovey dovey stuff" reference but also the "chewing bubblegum" bit, great days.

Yes I love Discotheque! U2 have probably never been more ironic. The result is that the ravers in the club are dancing to a song which actually satirises their activity! Plus it has a killer guitar riff.

Arguably one of Edge's best guitar riffs ever.....up there with Vertigo IMO.

I love POP and love this song more than I care to admit. Its too bad that they castrated it on the "Best of" album. They basically took everything raw and badass and snipped it off in favor of total blandness. I totally skip it when I listen to the "Best of" album.

I wish they'd play this song more in concert. Its too bad that some of the "throw away lyrics" (although not so throwaway when you know what the songs about) and the subsequent video turned so many people away from POP when it came out. It gets an undeserved bad rap. POP = Total brilliance...but I'll save that for the "POP appreciation thread". hint clue....cough cough. :D

EDIT: HA! I just saw the "I heart POP" thread! score!!!!!

I heard the "best of" re-imaginings of Pop songs and Numb. Wow, with the exception of Gone, which I find to be on a par with the original, they completely butchered them all.

The question is..why? Discotheque sounds hollow and pointless, Staring at the Sun is flat and Numb is annoying the new additions. Horrible remakes. Originals are top class.

Why? Probably to sell more "Best of" albums. Think about it...whats going to make even an above average U2 fan go out and buy a bunch of songs they already own? Well, if you put a couple of new songs on there and "remake" a couple of others than it gives you atleast a decent reason to do so. Worked for me. :)

Thats my guess. I also agree with you that the new Gone actually sounds better. I think Numb is okay...the new one that is. The only major difference is that you can hear Larry's vocal line a lot clearer...but other than that I don't notice a thing.

Your right about Numb, and thats what annoys me, Larry's clearer vocal line. I'm a big Larry fan, I just find that line really annoying. Mebbe just moi.

And your right about the remix/new tracks, but I think more tracks that were completely original recordings would be better than poor remakes. Honestly, I really despise the new Discotheque, and I LOVE the old. The new one feels fluffy and safe, no raw edge to it, no distorted solo or boom-chas. Watered down.

I love discotheque, the guitar sound is just amazing.
and i might also say i am a little bit addicted to the song, i still love this song and it doesn't matter how many times i'f heard it!!

One track I will never ever get bored of! It lifts the soul on a dank cold day! The video is spot on too!

 Hail Discotheque

I'll just throw it out there....

No boom chas = No balls!

There, I said what no one has the boom chas to say. :D

Boom chas own. There would be no Discotheque w/o the Boom Chas.

And the riff, especially the ultra distorted version.

I might add on Mofo, that song owns too, the studio version was awesome in my opinion, plus the first 10 seconds of the studio version gave me seizures. HAPPY SEIZURES! Well not really, it just made me shake my head like a complete maniac.

Actually I prefer the 2005 live version of that tune – hopefully it will be played more often on the next tour:drool:

The muted guitar effects with the wah pedal sounds like a late 70s porn...I consider Mofo to be baby making music xD

Yes, that funked-up guitar is particularly prominent in the live version isn't it? That's why i prefer it to the studio rendition, great as that is.

I saw them walk out of the lemon and play this at Giants Stadium in NJ during popmart...When the Boom-chas came around, a pyrotechnic cannon sound went off - it knocked us off our feet!

I should try chewing bubble gum while listening to Discotheque, then i'll choke on it when doing the Boom Cha dance.
