Best U2 track of the 2000's ?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Thanks. I think it's a gem of a song and to call it my favorite of the decade is not doing it justice.

I think that I could put together one really kickass album from their 2000's output.

good call. let's make one. here are some suggestions:

Mercy
WILATW
IALW
Kite
NLOTH
MOS
UC
Fez-Being Born
COBL
Smile
BD
ES

Moment Of Surrender

I can't really compare MOS of to anything the band has ever done. Very unique, beautiful, & haunting.

Honorable mention:

COBL
Kite
Beautiful Day
Original of the Species
NLOTH
Magnificent
UC
ES

Damn, quite a few

It was written in 98/99 when Bono's wife was pregnant with their first son, born in 99. :)

It was 1998, written in the hotel after one of the Latin American PopMart gigs (I want to say São Paulo; it might have been Santiago).

Beautiful Day

Even though it was probably made to be a first single from the beginning just like Vertigo it has IMO the best melody and flow of any U2 song this millenium.

I'll give it a try. I've come up with what I think is a good first-nine-track running order, but I'm not sure what the order should be after that:

1. No Line On The Horizon
2. Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)
3. Beautiful Day
4. Magnificent
5. City Of Blinding Lights
6. Vertigo
7. Elevation
8. Get On Your Boots
9. Fez-Being Born

I think that WILATW, TGBHF, Kite, IALW, Stuck, MOS, UC, and maybe Breathe, Walk On, perhaps New York should make the cut after this. Here are a few finishes I came up with:

10. When I Look At The World
11. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
12. Kite
13. Stuck In A Moment
14. In A Little While
15. Fast Cars
16. Breathe
17. Walk On
18. Unknown Caller
19. Moment Of Surrender

10. When I Look At The World
11. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
12. New York
13. Breathe
14. Fast Cars
15. Stuck In A Moment
16. In A Little While
17. Unknown Caller
18. Walk On
19. Kite
20. Moment Of Surrender

10. When I Look At The World
11. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
12. In A Little While
13. Fast Cars
14. Stuck In A Moment
15. Unknown Caller
16. Walk On
17. Kite
18. Moment Of Surrender

But it gets a little long, and it's hard to come up with a finish that matches the collective punch of those first nine tracks in a row. Anyway, this was just my attempt at coming up with something for this. If anything, what it told me was that U2 put a lot of good music out this decade, and that ATYCLB and NLOTH are really very good albums...and you know what, I've been re-acquiring a taste for Bomb lately too.

The first 4 songs off of NLOTH, (my favorite of which currently is MOS)
then
Electrical Storm
Beautiful Day
Kite
Original of the Species
Mercy
Fast Cars
Breathe

Fez-Being Born is probably the best with Mercy close behind.

As everyone is making an album out of the 2000's work:

1. City of Blinding Lights
2. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
3. Magnificent
4. Moment of Surrender
5. Unknown Caller
6. Electrical Storm
7. Stateless
8. Winter
9. NLOTH 2
10. Native Son
11. Fez-Being Born
12. Mercy

Beautiful Day, Electrical Storm, Window In The Skies, Vertigo, Sometimes

Funny, as a whole, I prefer NLOTH by far over ATYCLB and HTDAAB, but song for song, I cant even put one track in the top 5.

Just for the heck of it:

90's: Zoo Station, WGRYWH, Please, HMTMKMKM, TTTYAATW

80's: Wowy, Streets, RHMT, AIWIY, Bad

Always thought MOS was closer to So Cruel than Bad.

TGBHF came out in 99, not 2000.

My top 10:

#1) Levitate
#2) Elevation (The Biffco Mix) / Elevation
#3) Get on Your Boots
#4) Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)
#5) No Line on the Horizon
#6) Unknown Caller
#7) One Step Closer
#8) I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
#9) Magnificent
#10) Original of the Species (Single version)

And Mercy is the worst U2 song ever or something like that IMO.

That's laying down the gauntlet.
Here's my effort:

1. No Line On The Horizon
2. Magnificent
3. Moment of Surrender
4. Unknown Caller
5. Window in the Skies
6. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
7. Elevation (Influx Mix)
8. FEZ-Being Born
9. Stateless
10. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
11. Cedars of Lebanon

A few comments:
NLOTH really does stand up as quite a good record and its first four tracks are superb together - in fact the sequencing on that album is almost exactly right. It's just the middle trio of songs that don't stand up to scrutiny.

HTDAAB really doesn't stand up for me (if only Original of the Species had better lyrics - great tune), nor does most of ATYCLB.

Window in the Skies would have been a great antidote to Crazy Tonight. And what a pop centre this 5-7 would be compared to NLOTH.

Stuck... is a terrific pop song. Haven't listened to it in quite a while, but it's a superb record.

The stuff they did on Million Dollar Hotel really was great. I'd include Never Let Me Go here too if it wasn't really more of a Bono solo song.

For the record, these really are my favourite eleven tracks of the decade.

The WITS single is great mainly for the Kite soundboard recording, although I will admit to getting into a short WITS phase every now and then. I have two different WITS single editions, actually; I mainly bought them out of surprise that the little record store I go to in Austin had imported that U2 single from Japan.

WRONG

wits was a great song. and the single is worth owning alone for kite...

WITS always reminded me of U2 sounding like the Corrs and that made me cringe. It was a throwaway song and they should never ever go and fetch it back!

If we're talking from a purely technical standpoint, I'd say Beautiful Day. There's a reason that song is the band's most popular one in the decade.

From a personal standpoint though, I'd nominate ones like In A Little While and Magnificent as well...

OK, without testing the segues, I'll take a crack at this:

1. Beautiful Day
2. Breathe
3. Magnificent
4. Kite
5. When I Look At The World
6. City Of Blinding Lights
7. Electrical Storm
8. No Line On The Horizon
9. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
10. Moment Of Surrender
11. Cedars Of Lebanon
