I truly think that one thing hindering U2's "rocker" songs like American Soul, Breathe, Volcano, etc. is the way it is mixed/produced
Vertigo I would say is the last properly mixed rocker where you can hear the energy and the impact of that energy really shows
American Soul is a decent enough song, but there is not enough of an impact when the chorus hits, and the drums and vocals during the verses just don't convey the same type of energy as it should for a song like this
It almost feels like they are intentionally holding back and mellowing the songs when I personally would love to hear them just go all out. That is what makes The Fly, Vertigo, hell even Desire, so energetic and fun to listen to
