This did surprise me. I spend so much time longing for U2 to get "Arty" again that I forgot how much I really loved their output in the 2000s.

All That You Can't Leave Behind and especially How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb are criminally underrated. Those are two classic albums, fuck what the haters say.

The problem with this is, in trying to keep the albums a realistic length (about 15 songs or so) I had to cut a few favorites of mine.

"Drowning Man" was one of them. "One Tree Hill" was another.

I would rank these:

AB-Pop

MDH-HTDAAB

UF-R&H

BOY-WAR

I'm not going to assign marks to each album, as I think that if it's my favourite over 3 U2 albums, so surely I would think it was at elast 5 out of 5 (if not waaaaay more)

"Drowning Man"

Bono has said that he has trouble listening to this song due to the choked nature of his voice. For me, though, the rough, exposed edges on his voice are what make this song: the sparse, mostly acoustic instrumentation underpinned by a beautiful electric violin part largely leaves Bono's voice out in the open and perhaps vulnerable, even. He holds nothing back when he sings "hold on, hold on tightly," at the climax of the song, and I have trouble deciding if this is an imperative command, a helpless, impassioned plea, or both at the same time. Whatever it is, it's breathtaking and it's beautiful.
