2nd Favorite Band?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Fuck after watching Rage Against the Machine live at Finsbury Park they might be my number 2 right now

Tom Morello is one of my absolutely favorite guitarist but it's kinda hard to say Rage is my 2nd band.

U2 will always be my first love, we may not date that much anymore but you're first love is you first love.

My second seems to be in constant flux between James, Ryan Adams, PJ and REM

Wow! James, Ryan Adams and REM all in my top 10.

What is your view on Travis? To me, one of the greatest bands that never was. The Man Who is just unbelievably good, but nothing even comes close after that.

cool picks

Yikes, I haven't seen The Smiths at all?!?!

For me:
REM, The Smiths, U2 are holy trinity.

Also love The National, James, Ryan Adams, Stone Roses, The New Pornographers, Beck, Neko Case, Rilo Kiley, Mates of State, Band of Horses, Nada Surf, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, and Arcade Fire...

I'm pretty much right there with you on Travis. Invisible and 12 Memories had their moments, but after that it was just a quick decline.

I loved Rage in high school and wore that t-shirt out. That first album (or maybe it was the 2nd one) was so great and fresh. I honestly had no idea they were still around as I haven't heard them mentioned in years.

I don't think Rage will ever come back as all the members have other work (especially Tom and Zach, who claims that their solo works are more important).

Yeah, the show I watched was a one off concert celebrating Killing in the Name being number 1 on the UK Christmas Day chart a couple years ago. They beat the X Factor which always has the number 1 song on Christmas.

yeah that concert footage is amazing, I actually watch it time to time

REM, Springsteen, Radiohead. In that order, and fairly significant gaps between them.

I imagine lots of overlap with other U2 fans.

There are many more artists who have individual songs or albums that I enjoy as much as anything by any of the above bands, but when it comes to depth and scope, plus the fact that I'm too old to ever properly bond with a band like you do when you are 18, that's probably about it for me.

Pink Floyd (Roger Waters) are my easy 2nd. Arcade Fire need more material, but they're on a great path. That's an incredible wealth of songs for just 4 albums and an ep.

I don't know what order, but I'd say top three artists are U2, Elton John and Elvis Costello. Other artists are up there, too... But I'll probably never be obsessed with them like I was obsessed with those three.

Since they have over 500 albums, which one would you suggest starting out with.

Bee Thousand. It's Lo fi, songs are short, you'll get the charm of GBV. Then, for more polished GBV, albums like Earthquake Glue and Universal Truths and Cycles.

Oh, and Alien Lanes is a good continuation of what they did on Bee Thousand.

Alien Lanes is one of the best albums of the 90s
Under the Bushes Under the Stars is a good one too.
After that I started to lose interest.

1. R.E.M.
2. Will Oldham / Palace Music / Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
3. Frank Zappa
4. Aphex Twin
5. The Beach Boys

Lambchop, Natalie Merchant, Tindersticks, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Beck, Guided by Voices and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have all been in my top 3 at some point.

Listened to guided by voices last night and I'm really impressed. I'd say it's the type of music that I wish was more relevant today and it's too bad I didn't get into these guys earlier.

The 90s 'alternative' scene was amazing.
It was already telling though that when in the 80s bands like Talking Heads, Talk Talk, etc were able to cross over to the 'mainstream' the 90s bands never quite managed that.
Now the mainstream is pretty much dead and the 'alternative' scene still produces plenty good music but barely seems to try anymore to cross over to a bigger audience.

For me U2 is way up there as well. No other band gets close.
I'm just really surprised nobody named Queen here. If Freddie Mercury was still alive it might actually be a very close second spot (saying that without having seen them live; and live performance is hugely important in my love for U2)

The last six albums GBV did were in the span of just two years from 2012 to 2014 and it was overkill but there are gems. Pollard is a tough act to follow simply because of the ridiculous amount of material he releases.

Ah, I don'tgo by strict hierarchical structure when it comes to certain areas of comparisons in life.

U2 are in my Ultra top pantheon.

Since I'm in the older fan group here.. I had several bands before U2 that have taken & continue to take me to those sublime places.
The fact that u2 has joined that group is a testament to their talant and vibrancy.

For me : The Who, Springsteen, The Patti Smith Group, Television.

The Beatles occupy their own special place because how they truely changed music in the USA, then he world, BUT I can't truly site them in my top 5 because they never played live past the screaming teenagers Phase! (And yes i was one of them @ the old  Shea Stadium- tho I was a,tween even :D ).

If my life hasn't taken such a sharp turn in the mid-90's... I'd might have at least at times have the kind if income to keep up w tech (Sirius, i-tunes etc)see shows my keeping up w music has been less consistent. :( if I could be outside of shows in warm weather I did , I do- ThecNational in 2007)

With some NYC or nearby radio still being more open to more independent bands, performers I caught some sonically... PJ, Foos, AF, the early 00's like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, t he Killers etc. Then the mix it up new station went to Sirus; I lost WFUV FM ( Fordan U) when I moved "south" to Brooklyn. Now hat I'm north again I've refound FUV!
S there are dfinately bands from mid-00's onward that really like at least what I can hear of them.

Summer 14 I caught a,psychedelic band The Temple. Impressed w their live show.
I need to write down more names i hear... Certanly have some floating around in my memory that are newer.

Powers, I love Music! :D

I had a hard time trying to come up with what would be my third or fourth favourite band... after U2 and Muse there's quite a few bands I enjoy a lot, but nothing that radical. I guess Nightwish would be third, and the fourth place would be a tossup between Snow Patrol, The Killers and Sonata Arctica.

I was gonna mention Queen. My first favorite band. Went back and bought every album in the early 90s. Achtung Baby pulled me away from them, but they are still my #2
