1986 (The seeds of The Joshua Tree)

Watching footage from Conspiracy Of Hope and the Self Aid 86 performance it was a very interesting point in U2's career.

The seeds of Joshua Tree were being planted during this time and you can really see it in their performances.

Here's the seed that didn't sprout:

"Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat."
"And as for Bono, he needs a colostomy bag for his mouth."

Ah, Womanfish...love the energy of this song, but it's a wreck...

I wish there was some clear footage of this performance, but alas we at least have 'something' to look at.

The Conspiracy of Hope actually happened in the middle of TJT sessions. I'm sure U2 used the energy of that tour to finish up the album...

Don't forget the original version of Silver and Gold and don't get me started on the Sun City song - Bono at his hellfire best and sorry I know that was 1985 but such an amazing time in my early U2 fandom

I love the Self Aid performance. Bono is angry as all hell. It has one of the best performances of Bad ever. Albeit it's a slightly shorter version with some of the middle verses missing. But that is more than made up for by Bono's Candle In The Wind improv at the end. Simply awesome.

I think you mean that the TV Gaga performance is the single greatest event in U2 history.

They were time constrained.
