London no-go

After nearly 2 years away, I finally went back to London for the first time after 7 years living there and I was amazed how many things I noticed for the first time. Cost of living, how unhealthy living there was for me, how long it took to get into work, the crowds of people etc. I loved my time there and I was considering going back after I've had my fill of Canada but after spending a few weeks there, I am definitely done with London. Was great seeing friends and re-tracing old haunts but...

Any Tax experts in Canada?

I bought a house about a year ago and with me likely to be leaving Canada during the latter half of 2008 I need to find out a couple of things:

1. If I sell my house before I leave, am I subject to capital gains tax?

2. If I don't sell my house before I leave but instead rent it out, once my mortgage is paid, is there anything else to worry about?

3. Do I have to pay tax on rent obtained if I rent my house out while I am living abroad?

Its so fucking addictive its unreal.

Always enjoyed playing risk when I was a kid.. now you can play online in tons of different types of games, maps etc.

I need to get a life again. Well.. maybe after one more game..

Leaving Canada end of 2008

Had a long chat with our HR dept today. My Canadian work permit ends Dec 31st of this year. Work will apply for a new work permit and also my Canadian residency. However...

They can only get another work permit for max. of one year. Applying for residancy can take anywhere up to 18 months and can cost up to 10k. While work would do most of the applying etc. if i left within a certain period of time, I would have to pay the cost of applying for residency back.

My folks left a few days ago after spending 5 days with me here in Toronto. Its the first time I had seen them for over a year since I was last home in Ireland. Its hard saying goodbye again, especially as they are both well into their 60's. Luckily I will be back in Ireland end of August for 5 days so not too long till I see them again.
