Typically, when I mention Minnesota and hip-hop in the same sentence, I get a response similar to: “There’s hip-hop in Minnesota?” And, yes, there is – a vibrant and highly successful independent scene is concentrated in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Each year, hip-hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment and Atmosphere, one of the more famous acts from the area, present the Soundset Festival, hosted at Canterbury Park, just outside Minneapolis in Shakopee.
